The Social Issue
The proportional presence of women and men in the news and current affairs will increasingly reflect the structure of society and demonstrate a more considerable diversity of human experience, attitudes, and concerns. When speaking about women, references to such external characteristics as appearance, age, clothing, and marital status are more likely. In contrast, men are more often portrayed as influential public figures, and the media focus more on their professions, abilities, and opinions. At the same time, only 24% of news subjects are interviewed by or about women (O’Brien 73). These figures highlight problems of gender inequality in the media sector and represent a serious obstacle to the development of media and democracy.
The Artistic Choice
In order to create the poster, I selected images that demonstrate the inequality of gender representation in the media. The blue color of the poster simulates the privileges of men in the press, and the pink letters on a black background are designed to draw attention to the efforts and statements of women.
The Creative Process
I selected photos placed on a poster as the material for the assignment. I struggled to choose photos that visualized the current state of affairs and desires of women. Although, I will reverse the creative strategy and place a large photo explaining the problem and two small photos demonstrating the problem and the preferred solution.
I a Couple of Questions
How often do you see discrimination targeting women in the media? How can the result depicted in the poster be achieved?
