The spring holiday is finally here, and students, myself included, are overwhelmed about the one-week break.
This holiday happens to be one of the most awaited events in the school semester. It also happens to be the most dreaded week for both the parents and, in some states, the police officers. While some students prefer to laze around all week, this year has seen a change of events as some students have preferred to dedicate the week to help others. As most of them say, they wanted to do something different other than laying on the couch all day.
In Miami Beach, Florida, police are having a hard time detaining and controlling students. Most students in the state have spanned out of control. Currently, there are hundreds of thousands of college students in Florida. All these wish to attend the Sunshine State Party. Given the large number, it is becoming challenging for the cops to handle the situation.
The fact is that these parties can get ugly at times. For one, the Sunshine State Party recorded the death of a 20-year old who had spent the day drinking. Police have made speculations that there was foul play. However, investigations are ongoing.
It is impossible to forget the incident which occurred in Panama City, Florida, last year on spring break. There was mayhem, alleged cases of gang rape, and also shootings. In March of 2015, a gunman left seven party-goers injured from gunshots. At another party, a woman fell victim to gang rape, where she was abused by three men.
Some of the behaviors exhibited by students during this break should be regulated. In Florida, the occurrences in Panama City compelled the legislative officials to implement laws that allow crowd control and forbid loitering. The laws also restrict drinking along the beach, particularly during the month of March.
It is important to try and engage the students in much more productive activities. Students are more attracted to parties as compared to doing more useful projects. Therefore, it is important to ensure that the projects in question will appeal to their interests.
In Illinois, there were events that involved various activities. The primary aim of these programs was to engage the students in constructive activities. The schemes were referred to as alternative spring breaks. The strategy was initiated by Ball University. A particular group of students was involved in the cleaning, sorting, tagging, and organizing of the Community Threads located in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
The school seeks to continue expanding the program. It is after most students have shown their willingness to get involved. Besides, most of the university students have stated that they wish to have experienced added to their theoretical learning in class. As such, these programs provide them with the experience and platform of implementing the knowledge and skills acquired in class.
