Benefits of Pesticides

Despite the debate surrounding their use, pesticides offer several benefits. Initially, insecticides protect crops and increase production. Crop failure can occasionally result from pests and diseases, drastically reducing crop output. By protecting crops from these pests and controlling their populations, pesticides help boost agricultural yields and ensure a steady food supply (Upadhayay et al., 2020). As a result, food security and reasonable food costs may be maintained.

Additionally, pesticides can help maintain public health. Pesticides are used to control mosquitoes, which are disease vectors that can spread illnesses such as malaria, dengue fever, and the Zika virus. Thus, pesticides promote public health by preventing the spread of infectious illnesses and eliminating several threats.

Groups Susceptible to Health Risks from Pesticides

A combination of factors makes some demographic groups more susceptible to the hazardous effects of pesticides. Since their bodies are still growing and their organs are still immature, children are more vulnerable to the damaging effects of pesticides. Children, for instance, may consume more pesticides per unit of body weight, making them more susceptible to the hazardous effects of these substances (Kartin et al., 2019).

Furthermore, due to the growing fetus’s susceptibility to exposure to these chemicals, pregnant women are also at risk of harmful pesticide exposure (Upadhayay et al., 2020). Finally, due to their compromised immune systems and decreased liver function, older people are more vulnerable to the damaging effects of pesticides. Therefore, some groups of people are more vulnerable to the hazardous effects of pesticides.

Conclusion

In conclusion, while using pesticides has its advantages, certain risks must also be considered. Although pesticides have helped boost crop yields and protect public health, their indiscriminate application can be hazardous. Food security, environmental protection, and public health can be achieved by weighing the advantages and disadvantages of pesticide use and working toward responsible use. Sustainable agriculture can also be supported for the benefit of future generations.
