There is no doubt that the issues the foundation is working to resolve are related to human rights. The issues also touch on social justice, but more can be done to strengthen them.
The San Antonio Area Foundation has a power structure in place to control and coordinate its day-to-day activities. It is a hierarchical power structure with the board at the top. The board has also included a few residents to gain a clear view of the issues affecting the community. There are also officials, residents, and donors below the board who play a vital role in the foundation’s work. Reflection
As a community development worker, I will take several steps to empower the community and build its capacity, ensuring it has control over the developmental process. I will conduct an assessment of the community to determine the exact needs, challenges, and solutions to these challenges (Ledwith, 2020). The assessment can be conducted through observations, distributing questionnaires, and surveys once the needs are identified, making it easier to come up with ways to empower the people.
I will also develop a project that addresses various problems faced in the community, ensuring that the basic human needs of those in the community are consistently met. A community-created strategy to maintain local development and enhance lives beyond the project will be the consequence of a successful adopt-a-village program. Resource mobilization in the community will help build capacity for the people (Ledwith, 2020). Mobilizing stakeholders to support the community through finances, other resourceful materials, or opportunities to ensure the projects of the community are moving forward. Finally, I will create workshops on capacity building to equip community members to fully engage in developmental work based on the assessed needs of the community. Financial and budget management, leadership skills, marketing, and communication are examples of training areas that can be offered.
To build the social capital of the community I am working with, I will follow through on all the commitments made to the community. When the commitments are fulfilled, this builds trust among community members in you, and their connection with you grows. I will also be honest and effective in communicating with the community you are working with, which helps foster social capital. It means there is enough transparency on your end, which results in a great working relationship between oneself and the community (Wright et al., 2022). I will also facilitate and promote networking opportunities in the community. Plan community events that allow members of the community to connect, building familiarity that, in the end, fosters great relationships, which is, in this case, the social capital.
This task has enabled a deeper understanding of how community development should be managed to ensure its success. This task has enabled me to understand that community development encompasses more than just basic amenities and services. Members’ participation and the need for change from all those involved in the process are essential.
The one responsible for the process needs to bring the community together to create a strong, united community. One should ensure that the members have a chance to contribute to decision-making in matters that directly affect them. There should also be community justice to create a fair community where everyone has equal opportunities. My understanding has been centered on the principle of togetherness, interconnection, and active participation from the members of the community and various stakeholders.
Conclusion
This essay has presented the roles that the San Antonio Area Foundation plays to improve the living conditions of the communities around it. The programs implemented by the foundation have enabled thousands of students in the community to receive a quality education without interference. The programs include setting up a scholarship fund where anyone can apply and receive sponsorship until they have completed their studies.
