We leave in a world where by sociology is very significant in solving the day to day problems. The social world model is particularly very significant in understanding and solving some of these problems.
It acts as a framework for problem solving. The world is supposed to be viewed in an integrated and comprehensive manner which makes it possible to tackle the problems using the best approach (Friesen 33).
Factors That Influence Drinking Habits
A study is for instance carried out to determine the number of drinks that the affluent students can take and the reason for that particular number as compared to the less affluent people. There seems to be a very significant difference in the number of drinks consumed by different groups of students whether they are philosophical or technical majors.
The study is basically carried out in effort to try and find out the differences between the drinking habits of different groups. It is for instance believed that ones social status determines his or her drinking habits and at the same time, the type of job that one ascribes to determines the drinking habit of that particular individual.
This idea is particularly used by businesses to determine the class or group to target in their marketing campaign. There differences could be attributed to the income levels as well as their perceptions about drinking.
The difference in the drinking habits of the students who ascribe to the philosophical as well as those who ascribe to the technical lifestyles can be attributed to the time available for the two groups and their perceptions towards life and their ideologies as well.
Social Cognitive Theory
There have been of efforts by several professionals for instance the psychologists and sociologists in attempt to try and explain the drinking habits among students and get a viable solution to addictions among the young people. The social cognitive is just one of the attempts in tying to explain drinking habits among the students and finding possible solutions to the same.
The theory has brought new insights as well as understanding into the issue as it focuses on the cognitive as well as the behavioral aspects. The theory tries to explain how behavior pattern are acquired by individuals due to the environmental factors in which these people are found.
People always tend to respond to the environment for them to suit into it for instance the people around them. This factor is key in understanding behavior. They acquire certain behavioral patters that make them to suite in that particular environment. This theory is vital designing the various programs that help people to stop their addictions.
Alcohol Reduction among Students
There are several techniques that can be used to reduce alcohol consumption among students. Some of them include starting programs that are geared towards curbing the drinking habits of the students. This is done by involving the students in the campaigns against alcoholism, educating them on the dangers of alcoholism as well as rewarding those who respond positively to the same.
Such programs must include activities that are attractive to the young people like edutainment which encompasses educational activities that are couple with education programs. Influential figures can also be involved as the chances of the young people listening to them are higher.
Data Interpretation
The time that is available for drinking seems to be a very significant factor in the drinking habits and hence the number of drinks consumed. Different social groups of students seem to have different times allocated for the drinking and this greatly influences the number of drinks consumed. The affluent for instance have set periods for leisure time as opposed to the less affluent students who have no particular times set for their leisure activities.
The more affluent students therefore tend to drink less as compared to the less affluent. Most of those who ascribe to a philosophical lifestyle tend to drink less as compared to those of the technical lifestyle as the former tend to be restrained by their philosophies and ideologies that they hold dear. Those of the technical lifestyle tend to have less restraint hence drink more.
The more affluent tend to have rules and regulations that govern their drinking habits. The more affluent are sensitive to the issues like addiction and the other negative aspects of overindulging in alcoholism like the side effects and possible diseases or infections associated with alcoholism. The less affluent on the other hand are not so much cautious of those aspects and that greatly influences their habits and in some cases leading to addiction (Roberts 200).
The less affluent group in most cases tend to have various challenges for instance economic challenges and this greatly influences them to drink more and this easily leads to addictions in most cases.
Method Reflection
The use of interview as a method of data collection has its own advantages as well as disadvantages. One of the most significant advantages of interviews is that one is able to get the feedback there and then without any delays. An interview usually enables one to get deeper insight into certain aspects of the subject under discussion. The respondents are able to fully express themselves and the researcher gets information directly from the source.
Some of the interviews can be biased, expensive and at the same time costly as compared to other methods. They might also be perceived as intruding the privacy of the respondents. In the event that the interviewing method is not used, it is possible to use other methods of data collection like the use of questionnaires.
This method is advantageous over the interviews in the sense that it is less expensive and can be used over large geographical regions. Bias is minimized as the same questions are asked to different respondents. Closed ended responses are usually tabulated in a straight forward manner.
Reflecting on Sampling
The results from the interview apply to more than the interviewed group as these different groups have the same patters on life, ideologies and available time across the world. The method of data collection was effective as different groups were sample depending on their social status and what they major in hence including a good sample of the overall population.
Most of those students who take technical courses or jobs are often susceptible to stress and due to the nature of there jobs, they therefore end up indulging in alcoholism or drinking as a mechanism to avert the same. This explains the reason why the statistics taken were showing that the number of drinks taken by these people was greater than those who ascribe to a philosophical kind of lifestyle.
These mechanisms often results in these people becoming addicted to their drinking habits. The philosophical majors on the other hand do not adapt this mechanism of alcoholism as most of their jobs are less strenuous hence no need to adapt to this kind of lifestyle.
They mainly deal with ideologies and philosophies which requires no or less staining. Among the more affluent population however, there is a very insignificant difference in the number of drinks taken by the two groups.
This could be attributed to the fact that most of the efforts channeled towards their careers are almost the same and hence the slight difference in the drinking habits (Roberts 234).
Conclusion
The more affluent people are rarely constrained by economic hardships hence there preference in taking more than four drinks as opposed to those who take less than four. The less affluent on the other hand are usually constrained by economic hardships and hence the number of drinks taken is relatively less than four.
All these statistics point to the fact that ones social status as well as his/her career path can have effects on someone’s drinking habits. The less affluent might tend to prefer drinking as their best form of leisure and with no particular rules or regulations as opposed to the affluent who tend to set aside drinking for leisure time only (Friesen 111).
The less affluent students are on the other hand constrained by their economic status hence taking lesser drinks. Ones drinking habits are often influenced by the person’s career and how strenuous it. When the job is much involving, people tend to resort to drinking as an adaptive mechanism (Thirlaway 111).
