Source Code is an action drama where a soldier’s consciousness was placed to a bombing victim’s body in the mission to save the train from terroristic attack. The protagonist, Captain Colter Stevens, finds himself in the program that makes him appear in a passenger’s body eight minutes before the explosion (Jones, 2011). The movie with time-traveling computed administration and manipulations with ones’ memory, and consciousness could only be made in the digital era.
For instance, the title Source Code is the term for computer program instructions developers write, and digitalization is the outcome of that profession’s spread. Besides, Stevens retrieves information the way digital tools do with critical terms and possible places to check (Jones, 2011). The plot is built around moving a person’s consciousness – the notion characteristic of the digital era because of the rising possibility for humans to live outside their bodies. Furthermore, Stevens finds out that he is already dead in reality, and modern technologies allow people to have still alive identities such as digitalized avatars (Jones, 2011). Operations with human memories and consciousness that appeared in the movie are the consequences of rapid computer development and people’s theories that brains can be replaced with machines. Lastly, the alternative universe described at the end of the movie is also a product of today’s digital era where “perfect” societies and identities are crafted.
