Army Design Methodology, or ADM for short, aims to develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills in military leaders. This army techniques publication (ATP) describes working methods for framing problems and suggests ways to form teams to overcome them. In order to understand the terminology used in the doctrine, it is crucial for readers to know how the operational process works. Moreover, readers should familiarize themselves in advance with the information in Army Doctrine Reference Publication (ADPR) 6-0 and ADRP 6-22. They also need to have an understanding of how mission command works, as described in Field Manual (FM) 6-0. ADM’s key ideas are acquiring leadership characteristics and developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. The number of books and publications on this subject is large, and therefore those interested are advised to study other materials besides this ATP.
This publication is primarily aimed at Army staffs as well as commanders. Individuals involved as members of operational teams or international multinational headquarters in the course of action planning should be guided not only by joint doctrine but also by multinational doctrine. This publication should serve as the basis for ADM training for instructors throughout the military. It is important for every member of the military, including commanders and subordinates, to ensure that their actions are consistent with the rules of law, including international and host nation ones. Soldiers need to act in a way that is consistent with the rules of engagement.
