The U.S. Army and Marine Corps face operational environments that encompass a number of highly complex challenges and missions. No two operational environments are the same, and each is composed of several interrelated variables and sub-variables. Because of this, it is difficult to determine the causal relationships between variables and sub-variables, which are often interdependent, nonlinear, unstable, and inconsistent. The ambiguous and poorly understood operational environment seriously challenges human reason and traditional Army military thinking. Traditional Army planning methods have proven insufficient to meet such challenges. The so-called Army design methodology is better suited for these purposes.

The army design methodology is an iterative process of understanding and formulating problems designed for Army purposes. This process uses elements of operational art to develop and construct an operational approach to solving identified problems (Gilroy, 2019). Commanders and their staffs use Army design methodology to assist in the conceptual aspects of planning. This method also helps avoid the unimaginative and routine application of well-worn solutions that often do not fit the unique characteristics of each new situation. It provides the means for commanders to develop a deep understanding of complex or unfamiliar problems and creative approaches to solving them.

In this way, the Army design methodology allows for critical thinking as well as out-of-the-box creative approaches to solving complex military problems and planning strategies. A creative approach in most situations is best for planning tactics: that the enemy cannot anticipate. In addition, such methodologies are used to calculate the location of future military bases, as well as their relocation if necessary. This is why the Army’s design methodology is referred to as a multifunctional approach, applicable to the most complex Army tasks.
