Introduction
Nowadays, the cult of beauty is the most propagated thing in life. Whenever you turn on the TV, open up a magazine, or even meet your neighbors, you realize that the biggest concern of people is the way someone looks. For women, appearance is the main parameter that people use to decide whether she has any good chances in life. For this reason, women are worried if they have the smallest problems with their looks. This problem appeared to be so significant that even little girls see their main priority as being beautiful.
Main body
According to Wilson, “Daisey Mae…has been telling the camera that children are at a disadvantage in life if they do not have an attractive face” (par.2). Bauman, one of the greatest sociologists of modern times, explains the situation by the ethics of consuming society. He presents a number of pieces of evidence that after the 1990s, society has become so concerned about the consuming philosophy that even people became “goods for sale”. This is especially true in women’s cases as if they are beautiful they will be in demand which will make their lives rewarding; otherwise, they will be useless and forgotten. The situation is complicated by the fact that it is more difficult for women to provide for themselves if they are lonely because they get smaller salaries than men even if they do the same job.
I believe that this cult of beauty is the most troublesome thing in women’s life. I often meditate on the life situations of some of my female acquaintances. These women are good people pleasant to communicate with, well-educated, and if to put it in one word they are positive in everything they do. However, they are disadvantaged when it comes to their appearance. For this reason, these women are unhappy, and their lives appear to be miserable at times. I am especially overwhelmed by the reason of their situation when I think about beautiful women of terrible character, who offend their husbands and the other people around them, and still, they are in demand, and their lives are rewarding because they are beautiful.
Meditating on this disappointing situation, I decided to develop an action plan which will allow me to help such disadvantaged ladies at least in a way. My action plan is to organize a “day of beauty” for all the desiring girls of age 18 to 21 in the neighborhood. It would take me until the last weekend of the semester to implement this.
Some people may object that today young girls are knowledgeable enough to visit specialists on beauty to improve their looks, and this is definitely so in the case with a number of girls. However, my target category is made up of girls who are too shy to enter the doors of beauty salons as they believe that their appearance is too mean to even enter the doors of such establishments. Unfortunately, there exist such girls, and they are too concerned about the thoughts of the other people to even enter the door of the place where specialists on beauty who seem to be so exalted to them can be found. With regards to the above-mentioned situation, my purpose is to help such girls as much as it can be done to make their lives more gratifying.
- Who: around 20 to 30 girls aged 18 to 21
- What: a meeting with a team of professional consultants on beauty continuing for 7-8 hours
- Where: XXXXXX YMCA
- Why: To provide the girls with information from professionals on what they might do to improve their looks.
All the willing girls from the neighborhood will be invited to a sorority party which will begin in the morning on weekend and will end early evening this very day. The girls will be welcomed by a team of specialists encouraging them by the experiences from the other ladies’ lives who were able to improve their lives dramatically improving the way they look. This will be the first part of the meeting. During this part of the program, the images showing particular examples of what can be done in different situations in order to help women will be demonstrated and explained by the team of highly qualified specialists on hairdressing, cosmetology, fitness, and styling. Then, during the second part, every girl will be able to approach the specialist she wants for a personal consultation.
Conclusion
I will need other people to help me with this event. I will be the program presenter, and I will need the help of my mother’s friends. One of my mother’s friends owns a beauty salon where highly qualified specialists in beauty work. My mother often visits this place and sees how incredible are the result of these people’s work. I will invite them to conduct a few interviews with them during the program and will organize opportunities for the willing girls to approach these specialists in person.
As for material resources, I will need flyers to invite all the willing girls to the program. I will print them by myself using my own computer with a printer.
