Introduction

Language is an essential part of human culture and identity. It is a tool that allows people to express their thoughts, feelings, and ideas and serves as a medium for transmitting cultural heritage from one generation to the next. The documentary The Linguists sheds light on the plight of dying languages, such as Chulym, Chemehuevi, and Kallawaya, drawing attention to the importance of preserving linguistic diversity.

Survival of Chulym, Chemehuevi, or Kallawaya

Preserving languages like Chulym, Chemehuevi, or Kallawaya is crucial for numerous reasons. Each language represents a unique culture, history, and worldview, a repository of a community’s collective wisdom and experiences (The Linguists). The extinction of a language implies the loss of a whole cultural heritage, including knowledge about flora, fauna, medicinal plants, and traditional practices that could be beneficial in modern times.

If English Is on the Verge of Extinction

If English were on the brink of extinction, it would evoke an emotional response. Language is an integral part of identity, connecting people to roots, traditions, and communities. Its loss would entail losing not only a form of communication but also a significant part of our identity and cultural heritage.

UNESCO Declaration Statements

I wholeheartedly agree with the UNESCO declaration stating, “All language communities have equal rights” and “Everyone has the right to use his/her language in the personal and family sphere.” Respect for linguistic diversity is essential in a pluralistic society. It fosters a sense of belonging, promotes social cohesion, and respects cultural diversity.

Is Latin Dead?

Latin, once the lingua franca of the Roman Empire, is considered a dead language since there are no native speakers left. However, I wouldn’t label it as entirely ‘dead’. Latin profoundly influences many modern languages, including Spanish, Italian, and French. It is still taught in schools and used in scientific, legal, and religious contexts (Evans 55-56). Its influence is evident now.

The Role of Ainu

On the other hand, Ainu is an endangered language spoken by people in northern Japan. Unlike Latin, Ainu does not have any known related languages. Its disappearance could mean the absolute end of its heritage, making it ‘dead’ in the truest sense.

Biological Metaphors

The use of biological metaphors—’death’ and ‘extinction’—to describe disappearing languages can be problematic. They may imply that the language is no longer helpful or relevant, which can be offensive to the communities connected to these languages (Evans 100-101). Additionally, these metaphors suggest an irreversible process, which may not always be accurate. Languages can be revitalized and preserved with concerted efforts.

Making Children Learn Languages

A critical stage in language death is when children stop learning the language. Several conditions could influence this. Children may feel it’s useless for their academic or professional aspirations if a language is not used in schools or public spaces. Additionally, societal pressures associated with dominant languages may dissuade children from learning their ancestral language (Evans 34-35). Conversely, a strong sense of cultural identity, pride, and the utility of the language in the community can inspire children to learn the language their family members speak.

Linguists and Anthropologists’ Perspective

The Linguists offered insightful perspectives on the methods and processes linguists or anthropologists use to document and learn new languages. The film emphasized the essential role of fieldwork. This involves living within the community that speaks the language, engaging and interacting with them, and documenting their conversations, stories, and songs (The Linguists). Linguists focus on spoken words and the context, cultural nuances, and non-verbal cues. They also use digital audio and video technologies to capture the language’s pronunciation, tone, and rhythm. Transcribing and translating the recorded material is another vital process(The Linguists). It helps in understanding the language’s grammar, syntax, and vocabulary.

Conclusion

Language preservation is essential for maintaining cultural diversity and heritage. Efforts should be made to ensure that all languages, especially those threatened with extinction, are given equal opportunities to thrive. This involves creating an environment where children feel motivated to learn and use their ancestral languages.
