In the present essay, “the math problem” scene from the movie “Good Will Hunting” will be addressed and analyzed. Specifically, all the visual elements, which contributed to the scene, will be considered. It includes signs related to the culture, the characters, the location, and other symbols related to the scene analysis. It should be mentioned that each element contributes to the scene and is a means of expression.
First of all, it should be noted that the university is shown as a great and respectful place. The building is massive and partly resembles a government, such as the White House. Students are running into the building, which again highlights its status and importance for young people. Moreover, the relationships between the professor and students are hierarchical. It can be seen through camera angles: the professor is the central point of the scene. He is filmed from below: this visual element makes his figure even more significant. Furthermore, in the scene, the conflict between Will and professor Lambeau is shown. Will appears to be a rebellious young man who does not respect the university and the system (Van Sant). Even his inaccurate clothes and scratches on the face demonstrate his attitude and boycott for the professor. Will’s overall behavior and the way he looks to show his unprivileged background.
In conclusion, it should be highlighted that “the math problem” scene is relatively simple, but it involves various symbols. Those symbols are employed to express different ideas, such as the university’s status, the significance of the professor, or the unprivileged position of Will. These means include different camera angles, objects’ sizes, clothes, and characters’ gestures. The central conflict of the scene occurs between the professor Lambeau and Will.
