Introduction
This paper examines changes in the US population over 120 years. It examines the number of citizens and the percentage increase over 10 years. It is evident that population growth has been steady over time, but the rate of increase has varied during specific periods. Thus, it becomes possible to accurately estimate population growth dynamics, facilitating a more thorough analysis.
Population Analysis
There are undoubtedly patterns to which population growth details are related, and each trend has its own reason. For example, the growth from 1900 to 1910, with a record of over 20%, was primarily due to high birth rates and levels of immigration (“Population”; Fig. 1). The flourishing of economic opportunities may have attracted many during this period, driven by the growth of cities and industry. This pace continued almost until the Great Depression in the 1930s (Fig. 1).
During this period, a significant decline in the rate occurred due to the impact of World War I and rapid urbanization (Fig. 2). However, despite the changing dynamics, the population change remained positive throughout the considered periods. Even the next world war could not significantly reduce the rate of demographic growth following the economic one.
The postwar period was marked by an acceleration and almost a return to the indicators of the beginning of the century. The return of soldiers and other professionals involved in military and postwar tasks to their homeland promoted the active family formation and the baby boom that followed. Immigration, especially from the war-torn countries of Europe and Asia (the “Population”), was also active.
Subsequently, economic crises, including recession, inflation, and social unrest, from the 1970s onward negatively affected the population growth rate (Gagnon et al. 358). It was followed by a period of growth in the 1990s, which slowed and became more difficult after the 2000s. In parallel with economic stagnation, immigration became significantly more difficult, contributing to a decline in the population growth rate.
Reproductive Output and Growing Population
Density-dependent regulation can explain the decline in reproductive output of a population as population growth increases. As populations increase, the resources required for human reproduction and survival become increasingly limited. Among these resources are not only space and water, which exist in sufficient quantities, but also the products produced by humans – the production rate and its expansion may not keep pace with population growth. Such limitations may lead to competition for resources, to which some people are better adapted than others. Thus, in human society, competition for housing, jobs, and income levels can regulate the number of offspring produced.
Charles Darwin’s theory of natural selection provides a generalized framework for understanding the possible causes of what is happening, but it does not offer a comprehensive explanation. It can occur due to the specifics of contemporary life, and societal support may, at times, highlight the inconsistency of the theory of natural selection among humans in current conditions (Bradley 13). For the most part, however, density-dependent regulation can be observed as a significant mechanism of natural selection in society.
Conclusion
Thus, data on the demographics of the United States for the examined period indicate steady population growth through natural increase and immigration. The overall value did not turn negative, despite the fluctuating growth percentages and dynamics. At the same time, one can observe an inevitable cyclicality in this indicator, characterized by drops and returns to the peak, which parallels the economic or social well-being of the state and its population. Understanding such patterns is extremely important because they contribute to several key decisions in economic and welfare planning and can influence the stringency of immigration policy.
