The narrative by Robert is very sound in its intentions. His main objective is to try and prove that once an individual is guided by a principle and a desire, he is going to achieve what he has aspired for. There are several experiences that the author of the article underwent. He is trying to bring out these struggles and experiences that he had to undergo as a worker in the Vietnam War. He was an army man. His main work was to fly the helicopter that conceded several duties in the service of the other soldiers in war.
Chickenhawk refers to a narrative that was done by Robert mason. In this narrative, Robert takes time to bring out the experience that he had when he went to war in Vietnam. The narrative is mainly an exemplification of the stages that Robert took from the time of training to the time he became one of the workers in the army that took part in the Vietnam War. Moreover, the narrative brings out the experiences that Robert had after coming out of war and returning to his homeland.
It is always common for an individual to feel a second of tension at the mention of war. This is an activity where people undergo what we call a difference in ideological differences. These differences result in conflicts and fights among the people. The major cause of war is therefore the need by every individual to become the winner in everything. The story is therefore a personal narrative that exemplifies what happened in the Vietnam War and how it had adverse effects on different people. First and foremost, the author has portrayed a good mastery of the ideas and circumstances that led to the start of the war and how it took place. It is a first-hand story being reported by an individual who had a personal observation. This is a clear indication of the nature in which the story is to be factual. Also, the narrator has an excellent mastery of the names of the characters that were among his experience of the conflict.
The entire life of the narrator began in 1964. He had dreams of levitation once he would be a grown-up. He was a poultry farmer, an activity that he inherited from his father. The regular dreams that he experienced had a great impact on his life. He tells of a story he experienced in his dream one day. Here, he saw himself flying. This infuriated him so much. As a result, he almost built tall towers to enable him to get off the ground. This is a clear indication of the determination that he had concerning flying (Mason 2).
It was not long before he got to a college that gave him the right techniques in flying. He loved to fly one day. This is the passion that made him get into many things when he was in school. In his mind, he had a strong liking for the fact that he had desired to fly one day. He had not realized that he would fly a helicopter one day. He even had not desired to be involved in any war. He just had a dream to fly once in his lifetime. He had never dreamed of finding himself in a real war (Mason 121).
Over his entire life, Robert never dreamt of retiring or retreating either in war or in any other hard circumstance. Mason went through a period of training that prepared him for the services that he was to do. The training took place in Texas. This is where he developed the skills of living and surviving with others. He had never wanted to get involved in the war. So after graduating, he decided to escape the troop that had been sent to Vietnam. It was after a short time that he realized that he was to go overseas. This could not even stop him from his desire to fly in a plane or a helicopter. He took a trip to Vietnam where he encountered many things that he had never learned (Mason 56).
When he arrived in Vietnam, he had to set up a camp with the other army men. This was the job he had not longed for since he was born. He was therefore doing it forcefully. When work began, he had a hard time before he became the head of flying the helicopters. He spent time in the moods of war. For instance, he had to carry out various duties that involved the helicopter and the other army men. He could drop soldiers to new places, pick up injured and sick army men, and also deliver properties as food and water. In all these activities, he was the driver and headed the flying of the helicopters (Mason 45).
His acts of service as a helicopter man went to extended levels. He loved it all together. This is why he was able to survive all the hard times that he got to go through. This was truly the deciding point for him as he had longed to become what he was now. The other soldiers were able to realize the kind of person they had to carry out the air duties. In some instances, he had to maneuver ways of surviving. He went through hard times of fire and bullets but he never retreated or surrendered. He showed the spirit of cooperation and hard work. This enabled the other soldiers to survive many dangerous circumstances (Mason 69).
Many circumstances followed the life of Robert even as he was a helicopter operator. He went through many accidents that threatened his life but he could not fear or surrender. It was even amazing when he accepted to be transferred from one helicopter to another after making several crashes that threatened his life. Moreover, on many occasions, he had to take the responsibilities of the irresponsible soldiers. This shows how he was committed to the job that he was doing at the moment. This is a clear indication of the determination that is expected of every soldier in the world (Mason 123).
The author of the book has tried to fulfill his thesis. He has done several activities that have enabled him to succeed in what he went out to do. The spirit of determination has enabled him to survive the hardships he has been able to go through. He wanted to fly one day in his life. This is what has guided him in almost all of his life experiences. He is determined and focused. He has never retreated nor surrendered in any scenario. He has therefore succeeded in the fact that he has been able to withstand the hard times that he went through when flying the helicopter in Vietnam. Moreover, he survived the hard training moments to be a soldier man (Mason 79).
In conclusion, the book has been good and pleasant to my study. As the story unfolds, there is a systematic manner in which the ideas have been well organized and expressed. The writing is legible and direct to the point. You will find it easy to read, though it has few difficulties in making a good understanding in general terms. Moreover, the book is very interesting as it is being done by an individual who is the first person in everything that takes place.
