How Did Jordan Describe Daisy’s Background?

A

Jordan Baker finally decides to reveal her friend’s background. She tells Nick that Daisy and Gatsby have always loved each other. They met during the war, and it was love from the first sight. But Daisy married Tom Buchanan when Gatsby had to join the army. Just before the wedding, she realized that this decision was a mistake. Daisy’s heart belonged to Gatsby.

Detailed answer:

Jordan Baker is Daisy’s best and older friend. She opens up about her background to the novel’s narrator, Nick. In 1917, Jordan and Daisy were younger and had been volunteering at the Red Cross. Daisy, being a fantastic beauty, was attracting every officer’s attention. But Jay Gatsby, a young lieutenant, is the one she fell in love with. Shortly, he had to leave for the war, and Daisy promised to wait for him. However, later she forgot about Gatsby and engaged to marry Tom Buchanan. Before the wedding, the girl realized what a terrible mistake she had made. It made her get drunk for the first time in her life. Jordan notes that she had never seen her friend in that state before. It took a while to talk some sense into her.

Jordan witnesses Daisy’s relationship roller coaster with Gatsby and Tom. She informs Nick that when her friend received a letter from Gatsby, she nearly canceled the wedding. The marriage still took place the next day. The newlyweds went on a three-month honeymoon. When Jordan met Daisy later, she noticed that her friend changed. It seemed that she was head over heels in love with her husband and worshiped him. Jordan even adds one fact from Daisy’s background that doesn’t make any sense. One day, she asked if Daisy knew Gatsby, a man who lived in West Egg. She answered that she could not remember him. It strikes Jordan how Daisy could forget someone who stole her heart once.

It appears that Gatsby bought a house in West Egg because he wanted to be near Daisy. At this point, Nick understands that the green light across the bay marks the end of the Buchanan’s dock. It characterizes Gatsby as a romantic person for whom the distance is not an obstacle. The scene where he reaches out toward the light is a crucial moment that shows how hopeful and devoted he is. It is worth noting that this mysterious green light plays a vital role in the novel. It serves as a symbol for quite a few things.

Then, Gatsby wants Nick to arrange a secret date for him and Daisy. This demand strikes the narrator with its modesty. Jordan is the one who has to be the mediator. She explains that this is very important for Gatsby as he has been waiting for a reunion for a long time. All in all, Jordan is an essential book character. Thanks to her, the reader learns the story of Daisy and Gatsby. Jordan’s monologue brings a crucial insight. Even though Daisy married Tom and seemed to be devoted to her husband, she has always loved Gatsby.
