“They Were Careless People, Tom and Daisy.” Explain the Quote

A

Nick calls Tom and Daisy careless because their lifestyle is free of any problems. Sure, they have challenging situations, but they leave all the unsatisfying stuff behind and move on. Nick has different life values and sees Tom and Daisy as spoiled children. He does not like the characters’ careless attitude, but knowing them so well helps him maintain a good relationship.

Detailed answer:

Nick Carraway follows his father’s advice to remember that people have different life conditions. There is no point in judging them. However, there are many The Great Gatsby characters’ who are as careless as Tom and Daisy. Nick is not pleased with it at all. In chapter 9 of the book, Nick describes Daisy and her husband, Tom. He points out that the money they have is capable of solving any problem of the couple. The analysis of other events reveals an interesting fact. Carelessness is the principal life value for most wealthy characters, except for Gatsby.

Nick was surprised to discover how Gatsby cares about the people around him. At the same time, he is so reckless about the money he had. The significance of the quote description of Tom and Daisy is that it helps to show how different Gatsby was. Then, this character’s story discloses and Nick finds the reasons for his friend’s otherness.

The National Endowment of the Arts highlights the book’s theme of temptations caused by wealth. Also, it is related to the challenges of dealing with the past. They reasonably call The Great Gatsby the most famous classic story of American fiction. The novel finds the way to the deepest feelings of each reader.
