Why Does Nick Feel Responsible for Getting People to the Funeral of Gatsby?

A

The Great Gatsby appears to be the tragic story of a person who possessed everything, yet had nothing. Jay Gatsby is an extravagant rich man who very quickly earned a fortune doing some illegal business. Many people are truly amazed by him. But he is still a lost child who has no idea how to live in the world and be himself.

Detailed answer:

The novel begins with an extravagant party and the introduction of an eccentric young millionaire. However, the reader learns later that The Great Gatsby is a tragic story. It reveals the faults of the American Dream. And the person who became a victim of other people’s expectations is there to show them. In Chapter 9, we can find out what happens after the death of Jay Gatsby. Nick feels like he should get somebody to attend the funeral of his friend.

Nick felt responsible because although everyone attended Jay’s parties, no one wanted to come for the funeral. And Nick was obligated to make it right. He was the only real and loyal friend that Gatsby had. Nick was the only one who didn’t care about his great fortune. Others, who appeared close to the rich man, were somewhat superficial, fake, egotistical people. They were interested in Gatsby because of his power, his parties, his millions of dollars.

By feeling responsible, Nick demonstrates that he is not a person who was interested in Gatsby’s money. On the contrary, Nick was his friend because he liked Jay Gatsby as a person. It was hard, but he saw the true nature of the self-made millionaire. Nick felt obligated by his friendship to give Gatsby a proper funeral. He wanted to show his loyalty to that relationship they had and the general respect he had for that person.
