Introduction
In advanced practice nursing (APN), the high quality of patient care is ensured through continuous training and growth of specialists. This paper develops the APN Professional Development Plan, which outlines the features and scope of practice, as well as the basic requirements and leadership skills that advanced practice nurses (APNs) are expected to possess. This plan aims to promote professional improvement in the developing health sector by identifying growth strategies and personal strengths and weaknesses.
Advanced Practice Nurse Scope of Practice in Florida
The healthcare landscape in Florida is governed by the Advanced Practice Nursing Guidelines (APN) and the Nursing Practice Act. These regulatory elements establish the conditions and rules that nurses must follow in their state. The nursing profession requires a specialist to meet all educational standards, as those nurses who wish to be licensed must have a master’s degree in their specialty, with which they can practice in different institutions.
The application process for practice is regulated by the Florida Nursing Council, with the nurse paying a mandatory registration fee. Florida grants professionals full authority in the practice process, enabling them to diagnose and treat patients through advanced training and education. The State Government recognizes the potential of licensed nurses, enabling them to play an essential role in treating patients within their area of competence.
Educational Requirements
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs) in Florida are required to meet numerous educational standards. This condition is mandatory for professionals to be licensed as practicing nurses (NP). The Medical Services Act states that nurses must have at least a master’s degree to practice in the workplace (Toney-Butler and Martin, 2023).
Moreover, the education obtained must be related to nursing or a similar field and must have been studied in an accredited institution. These rules ensure that nurses have a solid foundation in their work and demonstrate the best nursing skills. The Act also defines the working environment for nurses and states that they may practice in various settings, including brigades, hospitals, and private clinics.
License Requirements
Professionals must apply to the Florida Nursing Board to be licensed as practicing nurses in Florida. Each nurse must provide educational documentation that demonstrates professional competence during this application process. Additionally, a registration fee must be paid by each person; without payment, the further application process cannot proceed.
The license cost may vary, so it is impossible to specify a specific amount. Once a nurse is licensed, she must remember to renew her license every two years (Toney-Butler and Martin, 2023) to maintain her licensure. The renewal process requires nurses to complete regular training to stay aware of all changes in modern nursing.
Regulatory Requirements
About the legal framework, the State of Florida requires licensed nurses to comply with the Medical Services Act. APN NP can be specialists in various fields, such as family medicine, emergency care, or pediatrics. For specialists to choose a specialized area for practice, they may be required to obtain additional certificates from organizations that provide accreditation (Toney-Butler and Martin, 2023). For example, if a nurse wishes to develop in emergency care, they can be certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). The cost of certificates may vary, depending on the chosen specialization.
Practice Authority
The state of Florida provides licensed nurses with complete practice. This means that nurses can diagnose, test, and prescribe treatment plans for patients themselves, as well as refer patients to other healthcare professionals and providers (Toney-Butler and Martin, 2023). Nurses have decision-making autonomy, demonstrating that the State recognizes the importance of training health professionals and seeks to offer comprehensive opportunities to improve patient care skills.
Prescriptive Authority
In Florida, NPs have the authority to prescribe drugs to patients during their practice. This authority applies to both controlled substances and legend drugs. However, to retain statutory authority, each nurse must comply with the rules set by the Florida Council of Nurses (Toney-Butler and Martin, 2023). These rules include maintaining the trend of continuing education, monitoring potential changes in the provision of drug therapy, and adhering to modern prescription practices. All professional actions must comply with state laws, which also indicate the level of competence of nurses.
Nurse Practitioner Core Competencies
The core competencies of NONPF provide a basis for assessing the strengths and weaknesses of practicing nurses. I can actively develop my commentaries in health research by focusing on mentoring and research. These efforts will lead to improved training, enabling the provision of patient-oriented care and contributing to professional development in nursing.
Personally Strong Competency Areas
The two competencies are based on the National Organization of Practicing Nurses (NPN) competencies, which can be described as fundamental. These include diagnosis and management of health, as well as the promotion of patient health. The nurse should teach patients how to adopt a healthy lifestyle and manage emerging diseases, thereby developing their healthcare skills (Poghosyan & Maier, 2022).
My strength lies in my ability to liaise with patients and help them understand their health management. I assess the patient’s health, supported by a precise analysis of diagnostic data. I make decisions related to patients’ health based solely on scientific practice, which enables me to conduct competent interventions.
Competency Areas Where There Is Room for Growth
There are areas in which I recognize the need for personal growth. One is the lack of understanding of health policy. I understand that I need to deepen my knowledge in this area, as I need to be able to implement and protect a leading health policy. I have a basic understanding of this topic, but I need to be able to participate in shaping policies that focus on improving patients’ conditions. I also believe that I have growth opportunities in the field of research, as I must acquire the skills of critically evaluating the literature and projects being studied. Additionally, understanding the results of research enables me to develop knowledge in the field of healthcare and expand my area of expertise.
Scholarly Activities to Help Achieve NP Competencies
To expand their competence areas, nursing professionals must be actively involved in scientific activities. As I gradually immerse myself in the workshops, I am broadening my understanding of developing my policy and advocacy for patients. It is also important to collaborate with experts in a particular field and to engage in discussions with them, which allows a more accurate understanding of the features of implementing policies (Poghosyan & Maier, 2022).
In the field of research, it is crucial to examine the research literature, which can include critical systematic reviews. These materials enhance the skills of critical evaluation of methodologies and results, and collaboration with experts further deepens research skills (Kilpatrick et al., 2023). Another scientific activity that could enhance my competence is mentoring nurses. By leading new colleagues and participating in various projects, I will gain a deeper understanding of how to apply the knowledge I have gained in practice.
Leadership Skills
Three Leadership Skills Required for Complex Systems
Communication, systemic thinking, and adaptability are the core leadership skills that enable specialists to navigate complex health systems. Communication involves open dialogue with colleagues, enabling effective teamwork (Pogosyan & Maier, 2022). Focusing on communication enhances patient care and improves the overall quality of healthcare.
Systemic thinking is the ability of practicing nurses to understand the interconnectedness of the components that make up the health system (Kilpatrick et al., 2023). The specialist requires this skill to devise innovative solutions and address complex problems. Finally, adaptability is a skill that helps practicing nurses better navigate changing work environments and introduce new practices based on evidence.
These qualities are essential for nurses, as they enable specialists to stay current with the latest knowledge and advancements in the field of medicine. Nurses will be trained to coordinate care more effectively and leverage the expertise of other health professionals with more extensive practical knowledge. Specialists also learn to perform full-fledged interventions of varying degrees of complexity, which are necessary to improve patients’ quality of life.
Two Strategies to Help Develop NP Leadership Skills
The first strategy is to participate in interdisciplinary medical rounds, which involves gaining insight into different perspectives and exchanging views with colleagues. In addition, practicing nurses are involved in hospital committees responsible for improving health service delivery. The second is mentoring by more experienced nurses. Mentors should provide guidance and share the nuances of their work, enabling new professionals to acquire knowledge based on experience. Including these strategies enhances the quality of patient care by ensuring that practicing nurses are better equipped to manage professional challenges.
Conclusion
Finally, the healthcare industry is carefully regulated by the Florida government, which sets out the Basic Guidelines for Good Nursing Practice (APN) and the Nursing Practice Act. These documents ensure that nurses meet educational standards and will be well-trained medical personnel upon graduation. All nurses are required to hold a master’s degree and pay registration fees to be eligible for internships. In the process of practice, professionals are obliged to undergo continuous training and obtain additional certificates of professional development.
Nurses in Florida have considerable authority, which is a testament to their value as employees. For my part, I find the ability to diagnose and manage patients’ health to be strong, but I still must improve my political and research competencies. Nurses should develop essential leadership skills and pursue strategies of interdisciplinary collaboration and mentoring.
