In the image under consideration is the Mayo Mansion, a three-storied building made of bricks and natural stone carvings. The entire house presents a magnificent building introducing the visitors to the columns prior to every entrance. The columns are not fluted though there is an Entasis. It is remarkable how Entasis serves the aesthetic purpose of showcasing the curve on the surface of the shaft. The columns in the picture we observe are having the diameter narrowing upwards from the very bottom. The order inherent in this house’s architecture is the Ionic order of columns. Though it is the simplest order, it is very old and looks powerful. Its shaft is wider at the bottom, another reason to state it is the Ionic order column is that it does not have a distinctive base and capital. An inverted frustum is what tops the column and makes it simply looking though beautiful at the same time. This type of column is categorized as masculine because the same type stands at the bottom of the Coliseum and Parthenon, which meant such a column would be able to bear much more weight. Although the topping is with inverted frustum, it may seem that it resembles an inverted bell as in Corinthian order columns.
Also, there are square columns that brilliantly highlight the beauty of the porch of the house. Such architectural square shapes of columns go back to the ancient times of unique and classic styles. Such columns could be seen in ancient European historical places as well as in modern civic places of America. The house under consideration is being magnificently enhanced by square columns; besides they carry the architectural purpose.
Significantly, the rules of balance were kept strictly when building a house. There are columns and other annexes next to every side of the house which makes it very symmetrical. Festoons and dentils adorn the building’s entablature. There is a wonderful three-bay façade along the portico. Except for the entrance door, there is a doorway that opens onto the balcony on the second floor and is decorated with fine railing.
Though the primary role of a cornice is to throw the rainwater free from the roof of the house, it seems like the cornices of this house are there to top the building with fanciful pompousness. The building has a flat hence Corinthian roof and cornice. Being of Iconic and Doric styles of classical Greek architecture the cornice here is plain horizontal without any flourishing patterns. However, there are beautiful moldings that represent a variety of fruits and beautifully carved leaves, another one with three crows, and one more with the angel’s face. Each of them is above the entrance doors. Symmetrically there are the steps leading to the entrance doors and the back yard doors with the iron flowerbeds that add beauty and grace to the overall view of the house from a far distance.
The entire house is a perfect representation of fine art in architecture with all the moldings and cornices. Although the building is seen from outside only, it is evident that house is full of light due to architectural solution of huge windows. The side wall consists of three bays, the outer two have arched windows that take the building back to the ancient centuries, though it was built in the beginning of the previous century.
