Description of Early Education Standards in Arizona
Each state’s curriculum has varied learning standards, with various subjects and goals. There are eight early education standards that kids in Arizona must meet (“Arizona Early Learning Standards”, 2021). The first is socio-emotional development, which focuses on emotional intelligence, interpersonal relationships, and social skills. The second category is learning strategies, which also covers problem-solving, creativity, confidence, and attentiveness.
The third one deals with language and literacy, which requires knowledge of language, as well as emerging literacy and writing skills. Mathematics and science are standards four and five, and call for a foundational understanding of both subjects. The sixth requires a child’s understanding that they are part of a community, while the seventh standard ensures their physical growth. The final standard is fine arts, which includes drawing and music (“Arizona Early Learning Standards”, 2021). Hence, the Arizona learning standards deal with various facets of early child development.
Pros and Cons of the Standards
There are specific strengths and challenges associated with using these standards in teaching. Firstly, as mentioned by the creators of the document themselves, it should not be used in isolation, meaning that it alone cannot serve as a basis for creating a curriculum (“Arizona Early Learning Standards”, 2021). Additionally, since children are naturally distinct from one another, and standardization can be damaging, it cannot be utilized as a tool for assessment.
However, state standards can be given to parents in order to speed up the process of achieving the necessary learning objectives while at home. This document can also serve as a guideline that provides teachers with an expectation of their students’ knowledge and skills (“Arizona Early Learning Standards”, 2021). Therefore, even if the Arizona learning standards cannot be utilized to build a curriculum on their own, they can provide teachers with expectations for students’ learning outcomes and aid parents in their child’s growth.
