In their scope of practice, a nurse practitioner is tasked with collaborating with other health care officials in assessing, running diagnostic and laboratory tests, diagnosing, and prescribing medications to their patients. To acquire a nurse’s core competencies, every practitioner has to have mentored patient care skills with prominence on sovereign and interprofessional exercise (Chan, et al., 2020). The competencies are essential and are demonstrated once a nurse practitioner has graduated and is involved in the nursing field that is ever-challenging and expanding.
As a nurse practitioner, I was tasked with the leadership of a team that was deployed to fight a bacterial disease in a refugee camp. My team researched previously used medication and, to prevent antibiotic resistance, we conducted research and sent results to the lab for analysis to develop new antibiotics and vaccines. Patients that were seen to have antibiotic resistance should be given probiotics that support the natural defense systems of the body (Chan, Lockhart, Thomas, Kronk & Schreiber, 2020). With the help of the team, we came up with ways to spot potentially contagious patients and isolate them from healthy people.
With the mastery of the core competencies, efficient leadership skills were demonstrated while at the camp as no irregularities occurred while performing the task at hand. A lot of information gained from clinical practice to improve practice and patient outcomes was fully utilized to get the samples to send to the lab and positive patient feedback was received by my team. Clinical investigative competency was put into practice when my team diagnosed the major problem affecting the camp and found ways to counter the issue. With the aid of the practitioners at a health facility nearby we looked into ways we could try to avoid future infections by finding possible outcomes for controlling the breeding site. The camp residents were educated and provided with personal protective gear and were indulged in educational exercises to enlighten them on the dangers of the infection. Recommendations were provided that were intended to optimize total patient care.
