Background Information
The chosen geoscientist, Aziz Ab’Saber, was born on October 24, 1924, in São Luís do Paraitinga, São Paulo, Brazil. He spent his entire life in Brazil – he was a Brazilian geomorphologist and a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences. Ab’Saber spent 15 years in his hometown, where he completed his primary education, before moving to São Paulo for secondary school (Vitte & Soares, 2022). He later joined the University of São Paulo for higher education, where he studied natural sciences before specializing in geology.
Having been born and raised in Brazil, family and the surrounding environment played a significant role in his life, shaping his interests and guiding him toward the right career path. As cited by Vitte and Soares (2022), Ab’Saber grew up in a region known for its diverse landscapes, including the Atlantic Forest and the Serra do Mar mountain range. It is right to argue that the region influenced him to develop an interest in and appreciation for nature and its associated geological processes. It therefore follows that the complex nature and geological formation of Brazil, together with strong family ties, influenced his passion for Earth sciences.
During Ab’Saber’s youth, the country was undergoing tremendous political and social changes. For instance, during the period between the 1920s and 1930s, Brazil was transitioning from an agricultural-based economy to a more industrialized one (“Brazil”, n.d.). The Atlantic Forest was characterized by its lush vegetation and was home to a wide range of animal species, such as jaguars, tapirs, ocelots, howler monkeys, sloths, numerous bird species, and amphibians. However, it’s important to note that human activities, such as deforestation and urbanization, have significantly impacted the wildlife populations in the region.
Geology of the Area
Diverse formations characterized the geology of Brazil during Ab’Saber’s years. More specifically, the region encompassed the Amazon Basin, the Brazilian Highlands, and the Pantanal wetlands. Since Ab’Saber spent his formative years in São Paulo, in southeastern Brazil, the region had fertile soils. The region was further known for its hilly terrain and the presence of the Mantiqueira Mountains.

Throughout his life, Ab’Saber pursued various specialty disciplines within geology. He made significant inroads into geomorphology and paleoclimatology. His main area of interest revolved around understanding the geological history and landscape evolution of Brazil. This led him to incorporate interdisciplinary approaches to study the interactions among climate, vegetation, and landforms.
Ab’Saber also made significant scientific contributions across a wide range of disciplines, including geology. His accomplishments encompassed extensive surveys of the country’s natural landscapes and the reconstruction of the historical evolution of forests. Additionally, Ab’Saber’s contributions extended to other fields including biology, geography, ecology, and geology (“PeoplePill”, n.d). With a publication record of over 480 works, the majority of which are scientific publications, Ab’Saber’s expertise in science was widely recognized. Ab’Saber’s impactful scientific proposals include FLORAM, the Code of Biodiversity, and his influential theory of refuges linked to the Amazon rainforest (“PeoplePill” n.d.). It is correct to argue that Ab’Saber’s contributions to the science of geology were significant.
Overall, Ab’Saber received numerous awards and recognition for his work during his period on Earth. He was elected a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and the São Paulo State Academy of Sciences. He also served as the president of the Brazilian Society for the Advancement of Science.
