The success of Ba ba lu Bar depends on its ability to maximize the timings when customers want to be entertained. The opening hours have to be convenient for both the customers and the members of staff so that the needs of all stakeholders are taken care of. Failure to open in good time can lead to customers relocating to other bars that open up in a good time. The five-member management team must decide regarding the best time to open the bar.
In the meeting held to achieve this objective, an open communication channel was required to get the opinion of all the members. There had to be a chair of the meeting to head the proceedings so that there was equal participation. The chair, therefore, led the meeting and raised important questions such as why should the bar open earlier or late. All the members got to air their opinion on the same question that was raised. For the talkative members, the chair limited their time to five minutes so that they did not dominate the meeting. The members who talked less were encouraged to share their opinions and elaborate where they stated that they had no comment. This enabled equality and an open communication process in the meeting.
The chair also used the seven-step decision-making process so that the problem was understood, elaborated, and analyzed (Baumann-Holzle 1999). Alternative plans of action were also decided during this process to determine different practical opening times (Russell 1995). After analysis of the alternative opening times, the five members reached a consensus on the best time based on the arguments that were raised.
In the future, the decision-making process can be improved if members are given time to research the problem and possible solutions before the actual meeting. This would require members to be informed of the problem in advance so that they can look for information in good time.
