Introduction
The movie, Before the Flood, directed by Fisher Stevens, focuses on how climate change affects the environment and the role of society in addressing the issue. The movie, starring actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio, further highlights several actions one can take to address climate change.
The first action involves transitioning to renewable sources of energy. Secondly, turning off lights and other household appliances to reduce energy consumption (Elvladyman, 2019). Thirdly, transitioning to using public transportation instead of driving alone. The final action focuses on adopting more sustainable agricultural practices to mitigate global warming.
I will prioritize utilizing renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, from the aforementioned actions. Adopting renewable energy is the most effective step, as it tackles climate change and public health concerns. Using renewable energy sources ensures one is better equipped to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Most importantly, using more renewable energy sources helps reduce overreliance on natural gas.
Motivation
The motivation to switch to renewable energy sources was informed by the desire to mitigate the consequences of climate change. According to Dr. Enric Sala, by 2040, there will be no sea ice left in the Arctic Ocean, allowing people to sail over the North Pole (Elvladyman, 2019). Similarly, the motivation behind this action was informed by the fact that climate change is a global issue that affects everyone, regardless of geographical location. This explains why people should be ready to take responsibility for their actions at a personal and community level. As human beings, we have a moral obligation to protect our planet and promote environmental sustainability by supporting the implementation of waste management policies. Therefore, switching to renewable energy sources is one of the most effective ways to achieve a more sustainable environment for future generations.
Plan to Continue to Lead the Fight against Climate Change
The fight against climate change will require developing a comprehensive plan comprising several strategies. The first strategy is encouraging friends, family, and co-workers to reduce carbon pollution. The aim is to spread the message about the consequences of climate change to a wider audience. One way to do this is to join a global movement, such as Count Us In.
The second strategy involves lobbying local politicians and corporations to support measures that reduce emissions. Most importantly, I will encourage my community to vote for political candidates who prioritize climate action. The third strategy for consideration is transforming my transport system. For example, I will consider using public transport, preferably an electric option, walking, or cycling whenever possible. The final strategy in the comprehensive plan is to switch to renewable energy sources, such as installing solar panels on my roof. I will also normalize switching off appliances and lights when not in the house or using them.
