Introduction
Light exhibits varying characteristics when passed through transparent materials of different colors. In this experiment, three cellophane sheets were used as the transparent materials through which light passes. The sheets were overlapped, and light was passed through them. After that, light was passed through individual cellophane sheets, and observations were made. Materials
Red, green, and blue cellophane sheets were cut into rounded shapes, each with a diameter of 4 centimeters. A white sheet of paper was used to observe the different expected characteristics of light. Furthermore, a torch provided light that could be directed to the different cellophane sheets. The experiment was conducted in a dimly lit room for easy observations and accurate results.
Observations
The first step of the experiment involved overlapping the blue and green cellophane sheets and then adding the red ones. After that, light was directed on the set-up while on top of the white sheet of paper. In the first step, the white sheet of paper at the bottom of the set-up appeared black. The second step involved lifting the three cellophane sheets so they did not overlap. When the blue, green, and red cellophane sheets were lifted, the white sheet of paper underneath appeared blue, green, and red, respectively.
Explanation
The white sheet of paper appeared differently in the two positions. The overlapped sheets absorbed all the colors of the torch light, leaving only black. In the second position, the white paper had a shade of color different from the sheet being lifted. While in the first position, all colors were absorbed due to the overlapping of the cellophane sheets, in the second position, blue, red, and green colors were absorbed.
Conclusion
Cellophane sheets are transparent and can be used to investigate how light behaves when passed through colored media. The materials used in this experiment were three colored cellophane sheets, white paper, and a torch. Overlapping the sheets led to the absorption of all colors, making the white paper appear black. Meanwhile, lifting the cellophane sheets led to the absorption of all colures except that of the lifted sheet. Therefore, the different colors in a light are absorbed when it is passed through colored transparent materials.
