Introduction
Maintaining job positions is challenging, which has led many healthcare organizations to turn to artificial intelligence (AI) to address the shortage of workers. In the article “From Finding the Right Candidates to Keeping Them, How Hospitals Are Using AI to Address Workforce Needs,” Burky established several ways in which AI can be used to reinforce human staff. Burkey (2022) suggests that healthcare organizations should consider utilizing AI to mitigate employee turnover.
Reddy et al. (2020) asserted that there are different stages in the application of AI in healthcare, including the proposal process, algorithm development, and obtaining consent from medical professionals. This paper will focus on two stages: the proposal and implementation. All these steps are needed to implement AI in healthcare successfully for medication management and continuous patient data monitoring.
AI should be utilized in healthcare to enhance medication management, prevent medical errors, and aid in monitoring and diagnosing patients. Medical professionals should be given more time to focus on other aspects of patient care, rather than spending a significant amount of time on administration, which would enable them to provide better care. This paper will focus on how AI can be integrated into healthcare to enhance staff capabilities and reduce the turnover rate among healthcare professionals.
Rationale for Topic Selection
The reason for selecting this topic is that the application of artificial intelligence in healthcare is believed to be a solution to decreasing turnover rates and enhancing the workforce of health professionals. Lee and Yoon (2021) stated that AI can help improve the precision, productivity, effectiveness, and efficiency of healthcare workers. Through technology, healthcare professionals are provided with help in their work. AI simplifies the work of professionals and provides accurate information that humans cannot provide (Lee & Yoon, 2021). It is because professionals can understand and use the provided data, unlike humans, who need to make interpretations.
For example, AI can help monitor a patient’s vital signs. The benefit of this is that it will provide caregivers with real-time information on a patient’s condition. This method saves medical professionals time because they will no longer waste time calculating or looking up the information. They will be able to provide the proper treatment based on their observations immediately.
It will also help make the job safer, as they will no longer have to worry about errors. According to Lakshmi and Bahli (2020), AI will also help medical professionals increase efficiency because when processes need to be carried out quickly, AI can complete them efficiently. It is because it will utilize the data gathered from patients to generate recommendations or calculations.
Convincing Arguments
Artificial intelligence in healthcare benefits professionals and has a positive impact on the institution and its employees. Sunarti et al. (2021) claimed that the primary goal of healthcare organizations is consistently to improve patient care and reduce the number of errors that occur annually. These two issues have already been tackled through technology that has dramatically improved patient care (Sunarti et al., 2021).
The combination of manual work and actual treatment is very time-consuming. It is here that AI comes into play, as this advanced technology can assist medical staff by automating certain tasks (Sunarti et al., 2021). It will also help create better working conditions for staff, as they will have more time to focus on other aspects and technologies that can improve patient care.
AI can provide a solution that enables a health professional to delegate certain activities to an unsupervised system. For example, an AI-based system can triage patients at a busy emergency department hospital. Thus, such delegation can provide relief by reducing the stress and workload of human resources.
One major challenge in healthcare is the constant shift of human resources and health professionals. The main reason is that patients are always different (Iliashenko et al., 2019). Their conditions, location, and even diagnosis all differ significantly, thus making it difficult for health professionals to hand over their duties or responsibilities to another person.
Another challenge is the limited number of health professionals; this makes it difficult for a health professional to work on multiple patients simultaneously. This, in turn, might result in some patients receiving substandard care (Iliashenko et al., 2019). The next challenge is that health professionals cannot control AI’s processes. They fail to understand this technology and cannot guarantee the standard of care they provide (Iliashenko et al., 2019).
Lastly, there is a concern that AI will replace human beings in healthcare, potentially leading to job losses. It constitutes a significant challenge because health professionals are known to be highly skilled, and their contributions cannot be replaced by artificial intelligence.
Use of Nurse Informatics Skills
The informatics skills and knowledge relevant to developing the assignment presented were a literature search. Using informatics, I analyzed the impact of artificial intelligence in healthcare and specific technologies that could be integrated into healthcare for medication administration and monitoring continuous patient indicators. The literature survey I conducted aimed to gather information on the potential use of AI in healthcare, which will inform the formulation of my research question. Among all the relevant literature, a study stated that AI could be used in healthcare for medication management and monitoring continuous patient data, which will help improve healthcare workers’ productivity, effectiveness, efficiency, and precision.
I reviewed the related literature to formulate a research hypothesis for my paper. Through this, I could develop different options for my research question. How do healthcare institutions use AI to reinforce staff and decrease turnover? After reviewing the literature, I developed a research hypothesis that I used as the basis for formulating my theoretical framework. For this paper, I decided to test whether AI will help improve the productivity, precision, efficiency, and effectiveness of healthcare workers. Additionally, with improved knowledge, I can develop advanced skills, as I can apply other issues related to my work as an Informatics technician in healthcare.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this paper discusses the application of artificial intelligence in healthcare. It included statements on benefits to health professionals and the organization in which they work. The goal of my paper was to determine if these benefits are actual.
I conducted a literature review, which led me to formulate my research hypothesis, which served as the basis for my theoretical framework. For this research, I extracted results from different studies that could support my hypothesis. I concluded that artificial intelligence will help improve the productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness of healthcare workers.
The paper found that artificial intelligence will improve the production efficiency of healthcare workers when implemented in medication management and monitoring continuous patient data. Therefore, it is recommended that the nursing station or computerized nurse call system be used to improve health workers’ productivity, efficiency, and effectiveness. Additionally, the paper found that utilizing artificial intelligence will have a positive impact on the organization and its employees.
Performing manual tasks and direct patient care takes up a significant amount of time. AI can enhance working conditions for staff by freeing up their time to concentrate on other activities and technologies that improve patient care. Therefore, it is recommended that healthcare organizations use artificial intelligence by deploying AI technology in medication management and controlling continuous patient data.
