Introduction
Throughout the nineteenth century, the United States experienced unrest stemming from its reliance on slave labor. The racial conflict that led to the Civil War pushed many people to take extreme measures in an attempt to reshape society at that time. Individuals who pursued this goal put their efforts into liberating the next generations. The pursuit of freedom for African American slaves created a harrowing narrative through the lives of those who fought against injustice in the United States, which is seen through the themes of religion, spirituality, and revolts.
The Meaning of Freedom for Black Americans
Denmark Vesey’s Revolt
Denmark Vesey was a Black Methodist whose striving for freedom for his people led to his untimely death. Religion was critical in Vesey’s plans, as he preached that African Americans had to follow a path similar to the Hebrews in Egypt (Hine et al., 2012). As a profoundly religious man, Vesey decided to sacrifice his life in an attempt to help others.
His radical approach did contradict religious tenets, yet it showed that the desperation caused such an intention from a man of God. In turn, the fear of potential revolts akin to the one planned by Vesey caused Southern authorities to increase their control over Black religious communities and free enslaved people (Hine et al., 2012). African Americans were forced to push back against the unfairness of the system through any means available.
Harriet Tubman’s Rebellion
In another example of one’s fight for freedom, Harriet Tubman’s activities in helping slaves flee their enslavers saved thousands of Black people. Tubman’s participation in the liberation movement boosted the North’s position, as chaos sown by her actions ensured that slaves had a promise of freedom shortly (Hine et al., 2012). Tubman’s spirituality was a primary force that led her past the challenges that she encountered. Her experiences during enslavement made her a fierce opponent of Southern authorities, which pushed her to the brink of death through abuse.
Dred Scott’s Liberation Attempt
In the example of the Court’s decision in Dred Scott’s case, it is possible to perceive how Southerners reacted to the social changes in the second half of the nineteenth century. Scott’s attempt to exploit the judicial system to obtain his freedom was met with resistance from both authorities and Southerners. At the same time, the North observed the injustice caused by flawed laws (Hine et al., 2012).
The mixed reactions to the initial decision in favor of Scott’s owner revealed how Black people longed for freedom and sought any chance to escape their situation. As a result of the decision being overturned later on, Southern states began to prepare for revolts, further reducing the opportunities for African Americans in these lands (Hine et al., 2012). Despite the eventual resolution of this conflict, every side suffered its consequences. While Black people felt discouraged from seeking freedom through legal means, Southerners were threatened by such prospects appearing again shortly due to Lincoln’s statements.
Conclusion
In conclusion, it is possible to perceive the value of freedom for African Americans through the hardships that these people went through during the nineteenth century. The lives of Denmark Vesey, Harriet Tubman, and Dred Scott exemplify the struggles of Black people under enslavement, which caused countless others to perish under brutal conditions. These freedom fighters used different tools to win their peers’ freedom, hoping for a better world for every individual, regardless of race or ethnicity.
