The article to be summarized is tilted ‘Business Ethics in a Global World: India’s Changing Ethics’. The author of the article is Margaret Steen and the article is part of Markula center for applied ethics. The ethical issue in this article is that of the ethical conduct by many firms in India. The author of the article argues that India and China are gradually overtaking countries in the west, especially the United States in terms of economic progress (Steen).
According to the author of the article, India’s economic progress can be attributed to its business ethics, which embraces what is referred to as collectivism instead of individualism. Many corporates in India believe in employee development which they do through continuous training. Due to collectivism, the employees in Indian firms are well-motivated because they work as teams, which are valued by the managements. Team work leads to a cohesive organizational culture which leads to increased productivity and economic progress.
I chose the article because I have a lot of interest in understanding various perspectives and views regarding the issue of cultural dimensions for various countries. This understanding is very useful in shaping my perception to employees from various cultural backgrounds, given that I have ambition in working as an expatriate manager in the future.
My opinion on the issue of whether collectivism enhances employee motivation is that I do believe that for any organization to maximize on its human resources, it must be ready to motivate them. One of the ways of motivating them is through instilling good values such as team work, group work and collective efforts. The argument that India and China will soon be the world’s super powers therefore should not be taken lightly.
