Martin’s problem is abnormal, and it can be confirmed with several arguments. Abnormal behavior refers to a combination of personal stress, refusal to follow social norms, psychological dysfunction, and lack of social responsibility. One way to define this phenomenon is maladaptive behavior, which can occur after a traumatic event in a person’s life or a major life change. In Martin’s case, he had to deal with the separation from his beloved wife (Bernheim, 2018). The incident significantly worsened his condition, causing problems with sleep, depressive thoughts, and a general distressed state of mind. Martin’s symptoms were so bad that he had to seek help from a doctor and start taking antidepressants (Bernheim, 2018). Certainly, a breakup often becomes a sad event for people, which spoils their mood and changes their usual way of life for a while. However, in Martin’s case, it is a question of weight loss, suicidal thoughts, unwillingness to work, and inability to maintain a positive attitude toward life.

The biopsychosocial model is a method of understanding health and illness through the combination of biological, psychological, and social factors (The Biopsychosocial Approach, n.d.). This principle will be useful in explaining Martin’s condition. Most the man’s depression was caused by psychological and social influences. He was used to living together with his wife and loved her with all his soul. The breakup shattered him-he felt betrayed and deeply offended. In addition, he had been in the husband’s status for more than ten years. To tell the breakup news to his acquaintances and friends was the hardest thing for him to do. It is also worth noting that after the separation, his physiological health problems worsened – he began to sleep poorly, and his heart began to pound rapidly at night. I would ask Martin the following questions:

  1. How do you assess the results of the treatment?
  2. In your opinion, what was the main reason for the improvement?
  3. Are you experiencing any symptoms now?
  4. How would you recommend other people deal with major life changes?
