Introduction
Aging is a natural part of the life cycle of every person and includes several characteristics that manifest over time in the body. Even though aging is inevitable, it is associated with specific problems and poses particular challenges for older people, which can lead to mistreatment.
Aging Characteristics
One of the characteristics of aging is memory problems. Older adults may experience cognitive changes, such as decreased short-term memory and slowed cognitive processes. This can lead to misunderstanding and conflicts with those around them, which can become a source of stress and mistreatment.
Another characteristic of aging is vulnerability. With age, the physical health of the elderly deteriorates, making them more prone to injuries and illnesses (Mendelson, 2020). This makes them dependent on the help of others and vulnerable to potential abusers or harsh caretakers.
Decreased social activity is also a common characteristic of aging. Isolation and limited contact with the social network can lead to the deterioration of cognitive and physical health. Older people without proper attention and support may face emotional and physical abuse.
Geriatric Nurse Considerations
To prevent the mistreatment of the elderly and provide them with a dignified life, nurses working with geriatric patients should consider many considerations when conducting assessments and care. Firstly, the patient’s cultural habits and expectations should be considered, and their traditions should be respected (Donizetti, 2019). Secondly, nurses should have specialized education and experience working with older people to manage their unique needs and problems effectively.
Thirdly, age-related changes and vulnerabilities, such as hearing loss, vision loss, cognitive problems, and others, should also be considered, and the approach to treatment and care should be adapted (Wu & Sheng, 2019). In the end, it is important to show understanding, compassion, and kindness to elderly patients so that they feel respected and valued.
Conclusion
In conclusion, older people deserve respect, care, and dignified treatment. Understanding the characteristics of aging and their problems will help prevent mistreatment and provide them with the quality care and support they deserve in their golden years.
