Goal Reflection and Revision
Lack of positive interpersonal relationships with employees can create an uncomfortable environment of suspicion, which can seriously disrupt the work process. For this reason, it is important to work on my abilities to communicate with others. According to researchers, communication is considered to be an “effective tool in the sharing of ideas, considered an essential attribute to be able to exercise leadership” (Andrade Vasconcelos et al., 2017, p. 4775). To be more precise, I would say that I need to be more assertive when I propose new ideas to my team. The reason for this is that even though I know that my suggestions can provide benefits and improve the quality of work performance, I am not confident in conveying them to others. Expressing an opinion takes a considerable amount of effort and can make a difference at a critical moment. Keeping silent, however, seems like a safe option, although I realize that in order to be more productive and continuously improve, providing new concepts and changes is profitable.
Behavioral Brainstorm
People who achieve this goal are not afraid of speaking up in a group of other people. They are confident in what they have to say, do not stutter, and clearly convey their ideas. In addition, those people are capable of participating in a conversation regarding a discussed problem. Even in a confrontation, they remain calm, collected, and convinced in their position. Nevertheless, they are also competent in their field of activity and possess the necessary knowledge for participating in a professional discussion. Moreover, such people can listen to what others have to say and adjust their ideas in order to meet everyone’s needs.
Behavioral Description
In order for me to achieve my goal, I will try to discuss work issues more with my colleagues. For this reason, I will also expand my knowledge so I could be competent in such conversations. In addition, I also realize that I need to work on my self-esteem since, along with communication skills, it has “significant main effects on self-leadership” (Song, & Lee, 2016, p. 29). Therefore, I will try not to focus on the previous mistakes that prevent me from speaking up and instead create a clear plan of what I will suggest and how it could benefit a team.
Behavioral Revision
The behaviors that I described above will certainly help me to get further to my goals of improving communication skills. For instance, if I study professional literature, and keep updated on the latest developments and advanced technologies, I will be more confident among colleagues. In addition, our discussions will be more productive in this case. There is no doubt that there will be circumstances where I will be uncomfortable, or someone will try to question my ideas and even be rude. Therefore, I need to work on my self-esteem, so I could protect my opinion without attacking anyone when such a situation occurs.
Final Behavioral List
In conclusion, it would appear that I need to improve various factors about my behavior. First of all, while meeting new people is important, I should be more confident while talking to my colleagues since among medical workers, “exists a relationship between higher self-esteem and self-concept” (Losa-Iglesias et al., 2017, p. 690). This change will allow me to express my ideas about improving work more freely. However, in order for my suggestions to be productive, I also need to continue my education.
