Monte Verde Hunters

The Monte Verde hunters hunted animals, and after the animals were skinned, the skin, bones, and other non-food items were left behind (Wiesner, 2017). So, the tribes used these hides to construct shelters. The climate most likely allowed the tribes to remain in such shelters, as the hides were unlikely to protect them from strong winds or constant rain.

It is more likely that such a shelter protected them from the sun during the day and kept them warm at night. Although these tribes were hunters, they also harvested potatoes and seaweed, which were most likely used to garnish animal meat. The difference with Banpo in food production is that they were farmers who grew food on the plantation, rather than just collecting and hunting, as at Monte Verde.

Banpo

At the same time, the Banpo were Neolithic farmers who cultivated rice and other grains (Wiesner, 2017). They were experiencing a different climate at the time. There was probably a lot of rain and high winds. Hides would not have helped in this situation.

Furthermore, the tribes were farmers rather than hunters, and they sought protection from the land’s external conditions, which provided them with food. So, they dug a hole as a foundation for their house, added stakes and branches, and covered it with mud to protect it from the sun. Also, because they were growing cereals, they most likely had a lot of leftover millet and rice, so they used these branches to make a roof to keep the rain out.

Comparison

By this time, the Banpo tribes had learned how to use the cellar and make pottery. There were many more houses per family, and more people could live together as neighbors. Other factors that account for the difference between the Banpo tribes and the Monte Verde are that farming allowed people to stay in one location for years, so houses were built with the expectation that they would last a long time. They were no longer easily dismantled structures, and they were intended for a small group rather than the entire tribe.

Each family could now grow its food, making life much easier by eliminating the need for men to spend time gathering and hunting. So, there was time to develop not only farming but also pottery-making. If people had continued hunting animals, there would not have been enough time to invent and create pottery.
