I am very fond of going to the cinema. Movies have become very popular kind of art attracting millions of people. The filmmaking was at the height of its fame when 3D movies were presented to the world. The introduction of Avatar overturned the world of cinematograph (Schedeen, 2010). It should be noted that three dimensions were used in science and art thousand years before the creation of 3D movies. The art of origami has been known all over the world from the first or second century. It was born in China and spread to Japan during the sixth century. As for the etymology of the word, “ori” means folding and “kami” is used for denoting paper in the Japanese language (Callie, n.d.). This art of folding paper without using scissors or glue captivates with its sophisticated forms. There were not any ancient written directions of making origami. This experience was passed from one generation to another. Modern origami was developed by Akira Yoshizawa in 1930 (Origami. History, n.d.). Today, this art is considered to be not only the Japanese heritage but the achievement of the mankind as far as it is used in different kinds of art and science (Murdock, 2011).
People have always sought to imitate the surrounding world in their art. Origami was the first art of using three dimensions. Creators of 3D movies should be acquainted with the art of origami in order to create 3D pictures. It is necessary to have creative vision and skillful hands to make a living object from paper. More than that, people making origami should use mathematical laws as far as origami is like a mathematical puzzle. Creators of origami should calculate every step and even a slight mistake may destroy the result of the process. Even the simplest forms are necessary to be thought over and calculated in every step. There is no wonder that the principles of origami are used in many exact sciences. Origami is like the sculpture made from paper. Creators of origami should pay attention to the details to make the object reminding a real thing whether it is an animal or things surrounding our everyday life. This kind of art is considered to be the attempt of understanding and explaining the surrounding world (Between the Folds, n.d).
Producers of 3D movies need to be skillful at this great craft. They should be very attentive to the details of the surrounding world trying to imitate them in their productions. The main aim of origami as well as 3D movies is to present the surrounding world as real as possible. Careful calculations help filmmakers to produce a captivating and alive world of movies. People watching 3D movies are plunged in another reality. A human brain is accustomed to perceive the surrounding world in three dimensions namely the height, the length and the width. It is not a simple task to create 3D pictures on the flat screen of TV. The use of 3D in filmmaking is one of the great achievements of making movies more real and influence human minds.
Although, the key points of origami and 3D movies are very similar, there are certain differences. Creators of origami try to make a three dimensional thing from the paper and creators of 3D movies make the image display more real. From this point of view, origami creators work with paper only using their imagination and mathematic calculations while 3D producers use modern technologies to achieve nearly the same results. 3D filmmakers are free from the constraints of physics. Origami seeks to imitate the shapes of the surrounding world while 3D movies aim at producing not only realistic images but realistic movements. 3D movies are the attempt to produce a real life on the screen on the one hand and to make a fantastic world of the movie more real on the other hand.
The most impressive 3D movies are fantasies like Avatar making the audience believe that such fantastic world are real. Comparing to origami masterpieces which are fragile to the extra conditions as far as paper is easy to destroy, 3D movies are the masterpieces of modern filmmaking which are saved for a long time and enjoy further generations. The production of 3D movies is going on to develop and it amazes the spectators with its new achievements. There is a great opportunity to enjoy 3D movies sitting in front of TV screen at home as far as there are TVs with three dimensions. This achievement is a great example when such a complicated art like 3D movies is developed from the simple art of origami.
As we can see from the above said, both arts origami and 3D movies are based on imagination, skillfulness and exact mathematical calculations. Both these arts aim at the imitation of the surrounding world. Nevertheless, it should be noted that 3D filmmaking has achieved more in this sphere as far as it presents not only realistic shapes like origami but also realistic movements. More than that, there is no problem in presenting fantastic worlds in a realistic way. 3D movies as well as origami amaze with its sophisticated and imaginative shapes.
