Significance

Corruption has existed in many civilizations throughout history. However, the phenomenon has been increasing in recent years at a very concerning rate. The practice is now severe and widespread, causing global economic issues. Governments and ethical institutions need to explore the matter and find mitigation measures before it gets off hand. Corruption in businesses occurs in many forms, such as illegal businesses, taking bribes, monopolizing markets, and forceful coercion in business transactions. Most African countries are democratic, yet, this democracy is a tool of oppression towards citizens socially and economically. The research topic is dedicated to the exploration of corporate governance and business ethics within the scope of studying corruption in leading African companies. The significance of the investigation comes from the fact that Africa, bribes, and other unethical business practices are a pressing issue, and it is essential to scrutinize it, as well as to suggest grounded solutions.

Developing Existing Knowledge

It would be rational to claim that the topic has been studied comparably thoroughly with the scholarly dimension. This contributes to the availability of a plethora of peer-reviewed and relevant materials that can be used to achieve a great extent of reliability and validity (Turyakira, 2018). However, it should be admitted that a comprehensive literature review showed that there is no reason to challenge the existing knowledge and findings in terms of the topic. Instead, it seems appropriate to develop this knowledge by narrowing the scope of the research and focusing on particular corruption problems in the mentioned country. Given this, the project can significantly contribute to the field by providing new ideas and recommendations on how these problems can be overcome. An important aspect here will be to take into account the related actual findings and conclusions of scholars.

Research’s Importance

Corruption is the leading cause of underdevelopment and challenging economic conditions in Africa’s developing countries. There are many factors that influence unethical business transactions, among which are neo-patrimonialism, deep-rooted powerful families, corrupt legal institutions, and lack of media freedom to expose corrupt cases. Colonial powers still influence the political and economic development of countries that were under their authority. Historical families take advantage of their capacity to form monopolies and nepotism in business transactions. Moreover, legal and media institutions lack the freedom to practice justice and expose corruption. Given such a considerable list of the pressing factors within the outlined framework, it seems important to make rational and justified suggestions on how to overcome them. The proposed research will be focused on addressing this aim, appealing to the best scholarly practices and academic principles.

Researcher’s Interest

Then, it seems reasonable to notice that business ethics gathers pace and becomes one of the central issues in most countries. As a student interested in business governance and ethics, I cannot overpass the problem of corruption in African countries and how bribes and kickbacks help leader corporations get contracts and perform in the business sphere. It should also be noted that I studied Corporate Governance at Master’s degree level, and I took a special interest in ethical issues in business. Such a background serves as a foundation for my desire to explore the topic deeply. I possess the required knowledge, research skills, and academic attitude towards implementing a study on the given theme, which, I believe, makes me the correct person to undertake the project as well.
