Digital GPS evidence refers to the location data that is collected and stored on digital devices such as smartphones, laptops, tablets, smart watches, and others. Gadgets can not only store and access GPS information from certain points of time but also track movement patterns and locations for months and even years. It is incredibly helpful in determining how victim and/or perpetrator moved before or during the crime, when they arrived at specific places, and what habits in regards to visiting different sites they might have. Thus, it is crucial to obtain GPS data during crime scene investigation and analyze it closely. It can be found and accessed through phones or laptops; moreover, most digital applications such as Compass, Camera, or taxi apps have geolocation tracking. Additionally, digital GPS evidence should be accurately and correctly collected and stored – just as physical evidence, as it has legal implications (Fisher & Fisher, 2022). Thus, digital evidence procured from the phone or smart watch of a victim or perpetrator include not only photos, text messages, browser history, and social media presence but also location tracking information.
Police labor unions’ main goal is to provide legal protection and overall support to police officers. Among their benefits is the fact that they deal with low salaries, arbitrary rank treatment, and violation of labor laws in the police. As unions are more organized and equipped to resolve conflicts in an accurate and legal way, they are more successful in protecting police members than individuals. However, unions’ work might interfere with management of the officers, and more often than not, union can work towards legally protecting an officer who committed a crime. Moreover, the police force has to negotiate with unions before introducing a new policy, rule, or reform, as they have to be approved by them.
As a police chief, first of all, I would try to form a strong and strict organizational culture that would facilitate commitment, equality, and objective judgement in members of my department. Additionally, I would collaborate with labor inspections to make sure that there are no violations of the labor law, and the staff is remunerated fairly for working in dangerous conditions or overtime. A successful police administrator must also account for current political and social developments to maintain an up to date point of view (Cordner, 2019). Finally, I would provide opportunities for continuous training and career advancement to expand the officers’ skill set and knowledge, and provide a healthy incentive to grow.
