Introduction
In selecting two artistic works that get my attention, I chose the novel 1984 by George Orwell and the film The Matrix directed by Lana Wachowski. Both works are iconic within their respective genres and are of interest to cultural researchers.
Justification of Selected Works
The novel 1984 was chosen because it is a classic of literature and has had a significant impact on popular culture and the modern understanding of totalitarianism. It represents a bleak future in which the Government controls all aspects of citizens’ lives, destroying individuality and freedom. This work reflects the post-war era, when society was consumed by fear of totalitarian regimes and the loss of personal freedom. Cultural details include control over information, mass propaganda, the use of language for manipulation, and a lack of privacy.
The film The Matrix attracts my attention with its futuristic plot and philosophical aspects. It tells the narrative of a world where reality is an illusion created by machines, and the protagonists fight for freedom and awareness of their true nature (Alcantara, A. C., & Michalack, 2022). This film was significant for the film industry and reflected the excitement of exploring virtual reality and technology capabilities at the end of the 20th century. It reflects a period when computers and the Internet have become increasingly important in people’s daily lives. The film poses questions about reality, identity, and freedom that have become particularly relevant in this era.
Time Period Reflection
Both works reflect their periods through content, themes, and cultural elements.
