Current Employment Statistics (CES) Highlights for February 2021 prepared by the Analysts of the National Estimates Branch Current Employment Statistics Survey U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics was released on March 5, 2021. Its main goal is to describe the general situation concerning the country’s employment, provide insight into its rates in particular spheres, and indirectly compare it with previous reports. In general, CES indicates the rise of nonfarm payroll employment. In comparison with the previous month, it is possible to define considerable job growth in such spheres as hospitality and leisure, retail trade, professional and business services, social assistance, and health care (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2021).
The rise of employment in the sphere of leisure and hospitality was predominantly concentrated in drinking places, food services, gambling, amusements, and recreation. In turn, the level of employment in warehousing and transportation has changed insignificantly, and employment in utilities did not change at all. At the same time, the level of employment in February 2021 is impossible to compare with the level of the same month in 2020 which had been several million higher in every segment (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2021). The same situation may be observed in all spheres that experienced job growth in CES.
At the same time, employment in such spheres as logging and mining, construction, and the government fell in February 2021 in comparison with the previous month. The most substantial decline may be observed in civil and heavy engineering construction, nonresidential specialty trade, local government education, and state government education (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2021). In comparison with February 2020, job loss may be regarded as highly dynamic.
