Introduction
Originally, virtus was used to describe martial courage and bravery in war. However, it evolved to encompass a broader range of Roman virtues. These qualities included prudence, fortitude, temperance, and justice.
In Roman society, fides referred to the concept of trust and good faith. Further, fides were used to indicate reliability between two parties, such as among married partners and the community. The values of virtus and fides were held in high regard in ancient Roman life and literature, as evidenced by their artistic works, including poems.
Virtus and Fides in Ancient Literature
The Poems of Catullus
Ancient Roman life and literature reflect significantly on the values of virtus and fides. In Catullus’s poem, for instance, these values are well expressed. The poem provides a description of the life Catullus and his friends lived. Catullus’ main goal was to achieve the Roman qualities of attractiveness, beauty, and charm (Catullus, 2016). This was in line with the concept of virtus, which required such attributes for anyone pursuing a political or military career. Although Catullus and his friends had differing life aspirations, they upheld the value of fides as they still relied on and supported one another.
The Poems of Propertius
In Propertius’ Poems, the values of virtus and fides are also featured and elaborated adequately. It illustrates how people interact with representations of seraphic qualities such as statues and temples (Propertius, 1996). In this context, the fides of goodness, trust, and faith are featured. As per this work, it is evident that these qualities of virtue and fides are worth considering and should be emulated by all people in and out of Rome.
Seneca’s Four Strategies and Octavia
In Seneca’s plays, exuberant ruthlessness is notable, and its significant results were disastrous and bloody. In the show, Octavia is a grim analysis of Mero’s tyrannical reign and the killing of his wife (Seneca, 1966). Octavia upholds the virtues and fides qualities of justice and utmost goodness in this act. This is evident in Octavia’s efforts to challenge Seneca for being an ineffective counselor who seeks to curb the emperor’s atrocities.
The Aeneid of Virgil
Book ten of Virgil’s The Aeneid, titled Captains fight and die, ” features the Roman qualities of fides and virtus. The poem describes a battle; Aeneas and his comrades meet the enemy with courage and bravery, as ancient Roman virtus requires (Lewis, 1953). The spirit of comradeship reflects the qualities of fides, which require everyone to uphold goodness and reliability. In war, when the enemy overpowered one of their soldiers, they never abandoned them but fought for them until the end.
Conclusion
In conclusion, following the examples discussed, it is evident that the Romans held Virtus and Fibes with high dignity and respect in their ancient lives and literature. Their literature, such as the poems written by Catullus, reveals the qualities evident in their lives. The Seneca plays reveal qualities of courage and justice. She fights against Seneca for poor leadership and misuse of power.
