The foresting industry is rather large in Canada, including British Columbia. While there have been some negative perspectives on logging in this location, there are some positive aspects as well. Some of the main notions are that this activity is performed in accordance with climate change and the prevention of wildfires. The following text will review why this action has a positive effect in this area.
As mentioned earlier, one of the main advantages of British Columbian forestry is sustainability. The industry takes climate change into thorough consideration in the process of its deeds. This is a very important aspect, as the province has a large amount of forest land compared to other worldwide jurisdictions, except for the entirety of Canada (Province of British Columbia, n. d.). Multiple forest companies in the province have certifications under various systems, some of them being the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Forest Stewardship Council and Environmental Management System. Resource management laws have a significant impact, preventing any sort of misconduct or non-compliance.
British Columbia is known for a strong emphasis on environmental and economic prosperity. With the help of research, this industry helps forests thrive and survive. It is crucial for loggers to decrease any fire hazards in order to inform them about them prior to their spread (Parker, 2019). The province has already experienced a severe fire crisis in 2018, which resulted in 1,000,000 hectares of land lost. If not prevented, such events will later deteriorate the issue and require more time and resources to tackle it. The threat of these crises emphasizes the importance of logging and forestry in general.
Due to the aforementioned legal requirements, loggers take valuable measures to preserve prosperity in the locations where they harvest. Under the demands of the Forest and Range Practices Act, loggers replant trees in these areas and take responsibility for the health of the latter as they grow (Parker, 2019). With the help of such projects, not only are jobs preserved in the province, but the forests themselves suffer fewer losses in the process.
A special kind of harvesting trees, known as selective logging, is even more beneficial for the environment. Its emphasis is on preserving larger and older trees that have a great impact in regrowth. This measure helps maintain biodiversity and assists with regenerating the next forest. Moreover, by preserving these kinds of trees, the ecosystem is safe, and so are the seedlings of younger trees (Bramadat-Willcock, 2022). As the latter, located around the former, join the network maintained by old trees, they are provided with nutrients, water, and carbon. According to forest ecology professor Simard, trees interact with one another underground by means of roots and fungi, transmitting and exchanging nutrients between the two. This helps them grow larger and stronger and increases their chances of survival by 20-30 percent.
In conclusion, while logging is often met with severe stigma, this is not an appropriate attitude for this action and the forestry industry in British Columbia. The laws and regulations maintain sustainability and eco-friendliness so as to preserve older trees and biodiversity and prevent wildfires. Each forest company has one or more certificates implemented as a way to prevent misconduct and non-compliance. The issue of wildfires is especially important, as such events may result in severe land losses, as the 2018 wildfire claimed 1,000,000 hectares. Selective logging is an even better type of logging that helps preserve old trees to control the growth of seedlings and help maintain the ecosystem. Thus, given the way logging and the forestry industry are handled by British Columbian officials, it has a more positive than negative impact on the environment.
