Michael P. Johnson’s Article

The article in question is about domestic violence. The author identifies four types of violence and describes them. These types are intimate terrorism, violent resistance, situational couple violence, and mutual resistance. The researcher has found that violence occurs in different situations and has different causes. Intimate terrorism occurs when a partner uses violence to take control over the other partner. Violent resistance occurs when a partner uses violence to resist the other partner’s violence or desire to control. Mutual violence occurs when the two partners try to take control of the relationship.

Situational couple violence occurs when a partner or both partners are violent, but they do not want to take control of the relationship. The author also addresses the viewpoint that women are as violent as men and claims that this opinion is quite badly grounded. The author stresses that men are mostly ‘domestic intimidators’ and ‘terrorists’ while some women can be violent, which is their reaction to their partner’s violent acts.

Finally, the author stresses that different sampling methods are associated with specific types of violence. The present research is based on data obtained from surveys and court, hospital, and police records.

It is necessary to note that the article has important aspects that can be generalized. For instance, the author provides four types of violence. This division makes it possible to estimate the rate of violence among men and women. It helps researchers obtain more correct and comprehensive data. Moreover, this can help develop more sophisticated research methods and sampling strategies. It also helps researchers identify the real causes of violence.

This can help social workers and other practitioners to develop specific strategies to help people solve problems associated with domestic violence. It is necessary to note that the article enables the reader to get a broader understanding of the family. Thus, domestic violence is quite common for families worldwide. Members of a family often suffer from violence, and partners often split up. There are different types and causes of domestic violence, but the desire to take control over relationships is the most common cause. The family is often regarded as a battlefield rather than the cooperation of two partners. Hence, domestic violence will occur unless people change their view of the family.

  1. What are the major causes of domestic violence?
  2. What is the major claim of feminist researchers in domestic violence? Is this claim correct?

Article by Kathleen Gerson and Jerry A. Jacobs

The present article is about married couples’ issues concerning the lack of time for their families. The researchers note that family life has changed considerably since the 1970s. In the 1970s, men were likely to be breadwinners while women were responsible for housework and rearing children. At present, there are a lot of families with dual-earner partners or single-parent families. Admittedly, these people are struggling with lots of problems.

They have to be effective employees (and invest more time in their jobs), but they also have to take care of their children, and this requires a lot of time. The authors note that some people think that people have started working longer hours. Nonetheless, there is little difference between the working hours of the 1970s and the 2000s. The major difference is that both parents (or there is only one parent) work and still have to invest time in their children’s rearing. The authors conclude that it is possible to help people to solve this problem. The researchers stress that the US government should develop strategies that can involve more flexible hours, financial support, facilities for couples with children.

The present article helps consider the family in a broader context. One of the most burning problems is a lack of time. Importantly, individuals have not started working longer hours. However, both parents in the family have to work to provide for the family. Parents do not spend enough time with their children, and this hurts children’s development. It is also important to note that the rate of single-parent families has increased.

Of course, this can affect the development of the nation in the long run. It is possible to note that the article has a very important general sociological point. The authors stress that US families are changing. The researchers describe the new type of family. Importantly, the authors focus on the recent trend, which shapes modern society. The researchers also point out specific reasons which have led to the trend. Notably, a recent trend affects several aspects of people’s life. Thus, people’s attitude towards labor is changing, and family patterns are also changing.

  1. How are families of the 1970s different from families of the 2000s?
  2. What solutions can be found to solve the problem and help parents invest more time into their children’s rearing?
