Introduction

Being an educator means not only providing learners with information but also sparking their interest and guiding them through the process of acquiring, retaining, and applying knowledge. This work involves many concepts and theories, since in this field, the person does not work alone, and an individual approach is essential. As emphasized by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership, teachers “have the greatest impact on student learning, far outweighing the impact of any other education program or policy” (AITSL, 2011, p.1). By finding more informative details and materials on teaching and learning, I was able to develop my skills and teaching methods as an educator.

Learning

The first concept that changed my perspective on teaching and the educational process is learning. Although it used to seem to me like a simple term defined as the process of gaining knowledge and skills, it is also a process of adopting new values and attitudes. While some might think of the educational setting when considering this term, in reality, it occurs through experiences and interactions, which is why these aspects are essential.

According to Australian professional standards for teachers, the first fundamental of teaching is to get to know students and the ways they learn (AITSL, 2011). This involves not only the socio-physical and intellectual development of learners but also their diverse backgrounds (AITSL, 2011). Moreover, learning can be understood through a humanistic lens, which emphasizes that the process of acquiring knowledge is grounded in one’s cognitive, socioemotional, and practical experiences (EDMT900, 2023b). Therefore, learning is a much more complex process than it seems.

Learner Individuality

Moreover, as an educator, I must understand that every learner comes from a different background, has different learning styles, and possesses varying levels of motivation and interest. Knowing students and their backgrounds can significantly help instructors teach children with different linguistic, cultural, or disability barriers (AITSL, 2011). In this situation, as a professional, I must remember concepts that will help me recognize and embrace such differences.

For example, learning theories are based on educators’ individualized approaches that help them tailor lessons to students’ needs (EDMT900, 2023b). Moreover, behaviorist views can significantly enhance understanding of how students acquire information and skills effectively, as well as which stimuli elicit the most desirable responses (EDMT900, 2023a). In my path of developing approaches to teaching and learning, I am focused on providing learners with a learning environment that is not only inclusive but also engaging and supportive. The mentioned processes will target not only the mechanical memorization of information but also the ability to apply the material to real-life situations.

Teaching

Speaking of teaching, similarly to learning, this process is also complex. Teaching can be defined as the process of fostering not only critical thinking but also curiosity and creativity. Teaching is founded on the principles of designing and delivering learning experiences to students (Kauts, 2021).

However, it is noteworthy that they must be tailored to learners’ needs and interests, provide feedback, and create opportunities for reflection and application of the material (Kauts, 2021). As highlighted by Australian professional standards for teaching, it is essential for instructors not only to establish challenging goals but also to possess knowledge of the content and effective teaching methods to improve students’ achievement (AITSL, 2011). Therefore, to be a successful educator, it is essential to understand the essence of teaching and its fundamental principles.

Quality Teaching

Lastly, I view quality teaching as the process of creating a safe, encouraging, yet challenging environment. To raise student achievement and ensure that Australia has a world-class educational system, enhancing teacher quality is seen as a crucial change (AITSL, 2011). Quality teaching should not only promote learning and the acquisition of new skills but also guide learners in discovering and exploring their passions, interests, weaknesses, and strengths. This is about educators guiding their students and continuously improving their expertise in pedagogy and subject matter. Moreover, this process additionally involves students and their willingness to reflect and improve their practices.

Conclusion

Thus, in my practice, the quality of teaching will be seen through lesson planning, classroom management, and assessment. The Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership states that “teachers share a significant responsibility in preparing young people to lead successful and productive lives” (AITSL, 2011, p.1). Therefore, it is essential to guarantee the quality of the educational process.

In my practice, I will first create lessons tailored to students’ needs, focusing on their interests and adjusting assignments and information to match their learning styles. Then, I will create an inclusive and supportive classroom environment that fosters students’ curiosity and motivation. Lastly, the quality of my teaching assessment will be evident in the timely and meaningful feedback that students can use for their own growth. Therefore, my teaching approach will be holistic, considering all aspects of learning and instruction.
