Introduction
The employer and the employee possess mutual obligations to each other. Thus it’s of great importance to have knowledge and understanding of these rights and obligations to avoid causing conflict at the workplace. Whether one works full-time or part-time, they need to always look forward to a healthy and safe working environment. For instance, the right to be paid according to the work and hours worked, free from gender and age discrimination, among others.
The Case
Therefore, Allen Lopez should be allowed to keep his job with the ExtremeNet as he was just trying to be the voice for his workmate below him against discrimination which is treating people differently from others.
Allen Lopez should not be forced to remove his website, because every employee has the right to free speech, privacy, and progress. If his website is allowed to remain, it may boost corporate performance.
ExremeNets executives can best respect Allen Lopez’s rights and moral dignity through listening to, soliciting, and handling complaints he brought up concerning discrimination against gender and age during layoffs, and poor treatment of other workers. Employers must treat their employees with respect, and listen to their views at all costs. They should not discriminate against their employers in any way be it racial, age, gender, or how they live. Therefore for both parties to at least benefit from what happened, they need to come with a better decision that will be used to find the solutions to this problem. Allen’s decision to come up with a new website with a striking resemblance to his current company was because he was never listened to, and that was the only way to draw the attention of his manager. By him setting up this new company, he will be in a position to listen to his employees and adhere to their rights accordingly. If Allen’s superior feel that he should be dismissed or disciplined, then he needs to follow the right procedure in doing that, because he has a right to discipline his employees if they break rules or cannot do the work as required, by following the right procedure, it will help to ensure fair treatment and consistency.
Rights of the Employee
Employees have a right to request flexible working this may include working from home just as Allen did most his weekends. While the employer doesn’t need to accept such a request, he or she must consider it, and if possible give some credible reason for decline (George, 1973). There comes a time when ethical standards have to be left aside to achieve a company’s goals (George, 1973). The company may recognize the advantages of ethics to establish the integrity of the company itself, as long as in ethics what is considered morally right is what matters a lot, despite the circumstances at hand (George, 1973).
Conclusion
All employee’s employers have the rights that should govern them at their workplaces to avoid causing conflicts to one another, but create a healthy and safe working environment for high and quality production of the company or an organization. Employees should ensure that they handle their employers with respect, without discrimination of any kind, listen to them and fairly honor their views. Both employee and the employer need to put into consideration the importance of ethics at work.
