Three Stages of a Great Essay
There is no way to get through school without writing an essay. Writing a great essay is a much easier task once you know the basic requirements of a great essay. Every great essay has the same basic format.
The three stages for writing a good essay are:
- Think.
- Write.
- Edit.
Writing a great essay is that simple.
In the first stage, think about what the topic should be or what the assigned topic is. Spend a few minutes brainstorming all the ideas you can come up with on that topic. Write them down.
Next, you should come up with a brief outline of what your ideas were from the thinking stage. For each idea come up with some points that you would like to expand upon.
Every great essay has a strong thesis statement. A thesis statement tells readers what you are writing about and the point you will be making about your topic.
The writing stage consists of writing the body, the introduction, and the conclusion, in that order. Write paragraphs for each of the points you will be making. These are the ideas that you came up with and put into your outline. Always write the introduction after you have written the body of your great essay. The thesis statement is part of the introduction. The conclusion sums up what you wrote in your great essay but says it differently, so you are not just repeating what you have already said.
Now for the final stage, editing. It is best to edit a great essay after you have put it away for a while and then come back to it. Some of the main things to look for are;
- Spelling and grammar errors.
- Are the margins correct?
- Correct formatting.
- Do the sentences flow easily?
- Does your title match what you have written?
Long Essay: Longer Not Harder
In our school careers, we have all had to write essays, some short and some long. A long essay is usually assigned to test your critical thinking abilities. A long essay will tell a teacher how well you can reason. Mainly, a long essay is a comprehensive look at a topic. A long essay is generally seven to eight pages or longer.
Like any essay, a long essay will have three main parts; an introduction that includes the thesis, the main body, and a conclusion. The thesis states the main point of the long essay. The main body of the essay contains at least three supporting points. In a long essay, at least two of the three supporting points need to include citations that support the point you are making.
Long essays require time and research. It is a good idea to determine immediately, what you will write your long essay about. Researching a long essay requires reading several different viewpoints on your subject so that you can decide what you think about your subject. While reading these viewpoints, you should note points that you found to be of interest in case you want to cite them in your long essay.
It is not a good idea to leave a long essay until the last minute because if you do not put enough thought into the subject matter it shows. You need to convince your reader that you know what you are talking about. You can only do so if you understand the material yourself.
Another important point when writing a long essay is to be sure you leave yourself enough time to properly edit the essay. The longer your essay the more chance you have to make mistakes.
Best Essay: Write with a Twist
Writing the best essay possible means writing what you know. The best essay is descriptive and imaginative. When you write imagine that your readers were not there because they were not. That leaves you to fill in the details for the best essay you can write. Take what you are writing about and twist it.
Tell a story for the best essay, do not just list each fact. Telling a story involves several different factors:
- Physical Surroundings.
- Characters.
- Emotions.

There are many rules in grammar, but once you learn them, they become automatic.
Grammar rules to remember for a perfect essay:
- Capitalization.
- Subject-Verb Agreement.
- Fragments.
- Run-ons.
To write a perfect essay all of the above rules must be followed. Let’s look at them individually. For a perfect essay, you have to capitalize on words that are specific names, such as the name of a person or a place. You also have to capitalize the first letter of every sentence for a perfect essay.
Every sentence by definition has a subject and a verb these have to agree. If you use a singular subject like ‘the man,’ then the subject also has to be singular like ‘is,’ not plural like ‘were.’ On the other hand, in a perfect essay with plural subjects like ‘the people,’ the verb must be plural as in ‘were’ and not singular like ‘is.’ A sentence without a subject and a verb is a fragment and not what you want in a perfect essay.
A perfect essay does not have run-on sentences. A run-on sentence is a sentence where there are two or more sentences written together with no punctuation between them or the wrong punctuation.
It is just a very short list of common mistakes. To write a perfect essay every time, you need to learn all the rules. Learning the grammar rules requires some work but once learned, they are always remembered.
