Introduction
Codes of ethics are a crucial component in any profession, ranging from the healthcare industry to the marketing area. As a warehouse safety and security professional pursuing a degree in emergency management, ethics play a crucial role in my profession. One agency that provides guidelines for my area of expertise is the International Association of Emergency Managers (IAEM).
It is a global organization whose mission is to advance the objectives of preventing, delaying, reacting to, and recovering from emergencies while protecting life and property (IAEM, 2020). Safety management mechanisms and codes can use moral and ethical principles to address malpractice and transgression-related safety hazards (Lindhout & Reniers, 2021). Therefore, with the main points of the code being respect, commitment, and professionalism, I am better able to manage conflicts of interest and confidentiality breaches.
Summary of Main Points of the Code
When summarizing the main points of the code, it is necessary to focus on several principles that describe them. For example, the first principle on which pieces are based is respect. IAEM members are expected to treat supervisory authorities, coworkers, friends, and, most importantly, those they serve respectfully (IAEM, 2020). They abide by all laws and rules pertinent to their goals and roles, and they apply them to everyone fairly and responsibly (IAEM, 2020). Members must respect financial resources by analyzing organizational choices to deliver the finest service or product at the lowest possible cost without compromising quality (IAEM, 2020). This point guides my behavior and actions as a warehouse safety and security professional.
The second principle on which the points are founded is commitment. Members of IAEM pledge to support choices that foster trust with one another and the people they serve (IAEM, 2020). By managing their positions equitably, cultivating relationships based on honesty and trust, and aiming for perfect correctness and clarity in all we say and write, we pledge to improve continuously (IAEM, 2020). As members work to raise the standard of living in their community, they pledge to improve resource management and the quality of services provided (IAEM, 2020). In my profession, this point ensures that I engage in the decision-making process that prioritizes the interests of other stakeholders as well.
The last principle in the code that must be mentioned is professionalism. IAEM works hard to uphold professionalism and guarantee public trust in emergency management (IAEM, 2020). The faithful performance of members’ obligations is the foundation of their reputations (IAEM, 2020). Education, safety, and preserving life and property are the cornerstone of the members’ professionalism (IAEM, 2020). As a warehouse safety and security professional, this principle guides my handling of emergency and non-emergency situations.
Benefits of a Code of Ethics
Several benefits can be outlined after reviewing the main points in the code. First, the code of ethics ensures a specific level of consistency through its uniform standards for all members. With the help of its points, the agency offers a set of principles that guide the professionals in their approaches and behaviors. The code helps each member engage in ethical conduct, set priorities correctly, and foster trust among stakeholders. Second, the benefit of the code can be additionally seen in establishing a professional reputation. The standards focus not simply on the individual but the professional overall, which allows the agency to demonstrate commitment to guidelines and ethical practices that are then valued by employers, clients, and the public.
Application in Ethical Decision-Making
Lastly, the application of ethical decision-making can be demonstrated in two situations. For example, one ethical issue that might arise in operation is a potential conflict of interest when dealing with contractors or vendors. However, if people adhere to the code of ethics, they can engage in appropriate decision-making where transparency and disclosure will be emphasized. The code will help avoid situations when objectivity is compromised. Another issue that can be highlighted is a breach of confidentiality when sensitive information is revealed, such as details concerning emergency plans or mechanisms. Meanwhile, the code of ethics might help by outlining the required protocols to avoid or control the issue.
Conclusion
In summary, given that the code’s tenets are professionalism, commitment, and respect, I am better equipped to handle conflicts of interest and breaches of confidentiality. It is vital to concentrate on a few guiding concepts that characterize the code’s primary ideas while summarizing it. For instance, respect serves as the foundational idea of each piece.
