Introduction

For many people, the opportunity to travel is, first and foremost, an opportunity to relax and experience a change of environment. Internet search queries on buying tours and air tickets are full of promises of ‘reboot’ and ‘quality rest.’ Of course, the opportunity to escape the routine and see something new is inherently relaxing, something everyone needs regularly.

However, when people leave the cozy cocoon of their environment and culture, they inevitably encounter a different culture and a different view of the world. This experience will likely be transformative, even if you do not set such a goal. In previous centuries, travel was accessible only to a few people, but now this type of leisure has become widespread worldwide. Travel is significant for enhancing perceptions of cultural diversity, fostering empathy and understanding, and contributing to personal growth.

Benefits of Travel

Cultural Diversity

First, travel contributes to a better perception of cultural diversity. Entering a new world, a person begins to comprehend it not only through an effort of will but also by passively receiving information from their senses and everyday interactions. For instance, the intensification of tourism in Nepal is a notable example. This country has long been relatively closed to tourists, but in recent years it has earned a well-deserved reputation as the world’s leading Buddhist region.

It is in this country that the key sites of this religion are located, for example, the Lumbini Area, where the Buddha himself was born (Rai, 2020). By visiting Nepal, people can experience the thousand-year-old Buddhist culture. Many travelers had no prior experience with this religion, and some even decided to become Buddhists under the impression that Nepal was a Buddhist country.

Of course, a new culture does not always resonate positively with a person, but this imprint remains with them upon returning home. This means that on the subsequent encounter with the same culture, it will not seem as alien to him as it did at the first meeting. The importance of travel lies in expanding people’s horizons and accepting communities that are different from their own.

Personal Development

A necessary consequence of travel is the personal development of individuals and the enrichment of their knowledge. Many tourists seek out various forms of entertainment and experiences out of curiosity, but ultimately, they get something more than an emotional reaction. In contact with the new, a person can gain the opportunity to know themselves and their preferences better, and expand the boundaries of their capabilities.

A notable example is the increasing popularity of homestay programs in rural villages worldwide, including those in developing countries. By settling among the locals, tourists have the opportunity to interact most closely with the community and are actually pushed outside their comfort zones (Janjua et al., 2021). This presents a challenge to adapt to a new environment, which brings numerous new experiences and opportunities for reflection. According to studies on this type of tourism in Indian villages, this approach contributes to the personal development of not only travelers but also the residents themselves (Janjua et al., 2021). Upon returning from new places, a person can apply the new experience to solve problems in their daily life, which is beneficial for self-awareness.

Empathy and Understanding

Ultimately, the significance of travel in fostering empathy and understanding cannot be overstated. The encounter with reality affects perception and intensifies feelings and emotions previously unexpressed. This is true not only for people but also for other living beings. An example is visiting safari parks and reserves in Africa. Many people are aware of poaching and the extinction of animal species from books and the news, but this knowledge remains rather abstract and does not evoke strong emotions.

However, there is a vast difference between seeing an elephant in a picture and seeing it in the wild, honest and vulnerable. This confrontation with reality sparks a surge of empathy and sympathy, leading to increased support for wildlife conservation initiatives (Sassenberg & Kimmerle, 2021). In this way, traveling helps increase people’s awareness of the problems in the world and, indirectly, accelerates the search for solutions to them.

Conclusion

In conclusion, traveling and learning about cultural diversity are essential for broadening horizons, promoting empathy and understanding, and fostering personal development. Many examples from around the world confirm the importance of people’s interaction not only with their immediate environment and those of their own culture, but also with representatives of other, sometimes opposing communities. The clash between cultures in past centuries happened on a much smaller scale, but now it has become a familiar experience for millions of people. This intense international exchange has many positive consequences for the entire international community. By embracing cultural diversity, individuals have the opportunity to expand their knowledge and perceptions, as well as to actively and respectfully participate in a global society. Travel has the potential to shape not only individuals but also the world at large.
