Introduction
Art has been an essential communication tool throughout the ages. Today, artwork constitutes one of the primary methods of recreating history. Art creation is characterized by a combination of creativity, experience, and the desire to express a particular theme. Some of the importance of artwork include the promotion of creativity, effective communication, and providing historical context.
The painting media is critical in ensuring the audience gets the required media. Winslow Homer’s Hound and Hunter in the textbook’s watercolor medium in figure 4-6 is selected as the inspirational context. Painting media selection is one of the essential activities in artwork because it dictates the qualities of an image.
Details and Background of the Inspirational Image
The selected inspirational image’s title was Hound and Hunter, created by Winslow Homer in 1892. The place of origin for the painting is Washington D.C, United States of America. The hunter is drowning the beer in water, and the primary thematic representation is the relationship between the hunter and the prey. Both contrast and brightness are balanced to give the viewer a clear depiction of the struggle in the water.
Details and Background of the Created Artwork
The image shows a fisherman equipped with adequate tools in the boat to deal with any dangers he may encounter in the river. The brightness and contrast are well balanced to show not only the object of focus but also to depict the calm in the sky as a sign of safety (Jacobus & Martin, 2019). The created painting may be a source of knowledge for fishermen to be prepared for any eventuality while in their line of duty.
Thematic Connection of the Two Works of Art
The two artworks are connected because of the theme they display. Both images share the relationship between the hunter and their environment, which is uncertain. In the inspiration painting, the hunter overpowers the prey by drowning. Failure to kill the prey may be lethal to the hunter. In the created art, the hunter is prepared to face any challenge by carrying the necessary tools (Jacobus & Martin, 2019). The two artworks are on two different mediums and thus have different clarity features.
The selected artwork is a watercolor art distinguished by its fine pigments, granulating quality, and higher definition. On the other hand, the artwork uses the canvas oil medium. It is distinguished from the inspirational image because of its higher quality, rich pigments, and creamy appearance (Morgan, 2021). The choice of medium affects the audience’s experiences because each standard has specific features which improve image appearance.
Comparison of Design Elements
The main design elements in paints include form, line, color, space, shape, and texture. Both the created and inspirational images are two-dimensional. In comparison, the selected image has a smooth texture because of the selected medium. On the other hand, the texture of the created image is creamy because of the oil density used to dissolve the pigments (Morgan, 2021). Watercolor and water paintings are known for their colors; therefore, the two images are colorful and have the correct brightness for contrast.
Conclusion
Paintings are essential works of art used throughout history to communicate and entertain. The selected artwork depicts a hunter drowning prey to stay safe. Navigating the features of watercolor and comparing it with oil on canvas proves that there are distinctions between the different design elements. Artists must have a clear understanding of the different mediums and choose the one that is fit for the required theme.
