In terms of sociological sciences, the first theory that I remember learning about was the Social Network Theory, which studies how people, groups, and organizations interact with others inside the networks that are relevant to them. The theory has been shown to apply to a broad range of other disciplines and settings as it enables people to look at society as a system of interactions between different systems that also interrelate within themselves. When it comes to behavioral sciences, when I was only a teenager, I learned about Freud’s Psychoanalytic Theory. Becoming more and more interested in psychology, I came across Freud’s approach toward dream interpretation, which the scholar referred to as the ‘royal road’ to the unconscious. As to biomedical sciences, I first encountered the Germ Theory when already studying at college, learning that specific diseases are the result of the invasion of the body by microorganisms, which are so small in their size that they can only be detected with the help of a microscope. I remember lessons during which we had to study different microorganisms through a microscope and understand their functioning. In critical care nursing, the focus is placed on the round-the-clock care for highly sick and complex patients who face life-threatening health issues. Among the theories mentioned in Villarruel et al. (2001), the Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing and TPB is applicable to the critical care setting because the professionals within the sphere place a significant emphasis on assisting their patients meet the required needs for care. Nurses can guide and direct their patients, provide both physical and psychological support to those in need, as well as create environments that are conducive to recovery. While self-care is not the primary focus of critical care nursing, its principles are also applicable to nurses who need to maintain high levels of self-care when caring for critically ill patients to have the capacity to be effective at care provision.
