Introduction

Our personality and individuality determines the kind of people we are in life. Gavin Macmillan, a top ranked Canadian flair bartender demonstrates a personality, which is a summation of the big five personality traits. This paper seeks to answer four questions about Gavin, personality, and motivation.

Gavin Personality Traits

The big five personality traits refer to five major personality characteristics used to define human personality. They include openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Openness refers to the ability to have an open-minded approach to a wide variety of choices in life.

Gavin scores poorly on this trait since he focuses too much on little things until he misses on the big picture. Conscientiousness is the ability to set realistic goals and having discipline, self-organization, and focus towards them. Arguably, Gavin scores high on this trait as he has unique and original ideas and seems to have it all figured out in his mind. He also involves everyone necessary to make his plans work successfully.

Neuroticism refers to degree or level of emotional intelligence whereby a person is able to perceive and respond positively and rationally to negative emotions. Gavin scores high on this trait because he takes challenges as stepping-stones. This is because when he incurs a higher expense than revenue gained he decides to recycle demonstration materials in order to mitigate the losses.

Extraversion is the ability of a person to exercise elements of sociability and good interpersonal communication. Arguably, he scores average on this trait since he is able to socialize fairly with bar owners, students, and group members.

Agreeableness is a trait, which enables a person to be cooperative and collaborative rather than being manipulative. Gavin scores high on agreeableness since he takes the advice of one of his group members about prioritizing important things in life. He is much more likely to be successful on his entrepreneurship, if he works on openness and extraversion traits.

Intrinsic and Extrinsic Motivation

Intrinsic motivation is the drive that results from enjoyment from either the task or nature of the results obtained. For instance, participating in a competition for fame rather than cash prize qualifies as intrinsic motivation. On the other hand, extrinsic motivation is the motivation resulting from physical rewards or results of an input.

For instance, participating in a challenge to win a cash prize rather than fame qualifies as extrinsic motivation. Certainly, Gavin is extrinsically motivated since he thinks of buying a yacht with a helicopter pad in it. Surely, he is working hard in his entrepreneurship in order to achieve this goal.

Goal Setting and Recommendation

Setting the goal to buy yacht with a helicopter pad is a great extrinsic motivation. It helps one to focus his energy and investments in order to achieve the set goal. A great dream calls for great organization, allocation, prioritization, and use of resources.

Ideally, Gavin really needs to work on setting realistic goals. He needs not be overly ambitious because it makes him overwork and this affects his overall performance and success as an entrepreneur. He needs to set realistic goals that are within his means.

Conclusion

Gavin is a good representative of people within corporate, business and social world. He obtains different scores on the five personality traits. He is extrinsically motivated, as he sets an unrealistic goal. However, he needs to work on his priorities in order to stay focused.
