Introduction
At different times and places, attitudes towards gender varied. While some were extremely strict about gender roles and did not allow the slightest deviation from the basics, other cultures perceived gender from a more fluid side. Differences manifested in complex ways and ran deep into cultural characteristics. To prove this, medieval, French Renaissance, and theatrical Japanese gender concepts will be considered.
Gender Roles in Medieval and Renaissance Societies
Medieval society and the society of France during the Renaissance converged in a strict division of gender roles into male and female. However, the main difference between them is that in the Middle Ages, women were literally cut off from society, obliged to obey men in everything (Giuliano 952). In Renaissance France, however, the roles of men and women remained in place, but the disrespect of Medieval times was replaced by veneration and idealization. France of that time presented women as ideals of beauty and created strong, independent heroes (Peebles and Scarlatta 27). Therefore, despite strict gender separation, attitudes towards women change over time.
Among the cultures mentioned, it was in Japanese Kabuki theater that gender roles were most liberated. Despite this, women’s roles were still predominantly performed by men. However, such fluid actors had to master the art of femininity, including how they walked, spoke, and gestured.
Female characters were often portrayed as strong and powerful, such as in the play “The Revenge of the 47 Ronin” (Cao et al. 330). Furthermore, the dance presentations reflected society’s values and the prevailing cultural norms and expectations. The leaders did not necessarily try to impose gender standards on their audiences; instead, they responded to the cultural expectations of their time.
Conclusion
In conclusion, societal values of the time significantly impacted the performances and presentation of different genders in public performances during the Medieval Times, Renaissance France, and the Kabuki theater of Japan. The main discovery is that gender frameworks were essential at the time, helping keep society stable. The dance presentations reflected the prevailing cultural norms and expectations of their time.
