Structure Type
As an architect, creating a structure that adheres to my customer’s desires is paramount. On this occasion, their preferred style for their residential property is Romanesque or Gothic. This report will consider the shape of the building, the type of architecture employed, and the elements that I intend to incorporate into the plan. A discussion will consider how the chosen style will impact the aesthetic of the building, as well as the overall feel of the property.
Choice of Style
After much thought, the customer chose a Gothic-influenced design for their grand residence. This style, originating from the Middle Ages, is known for its tallness, pointed arches, and elaborate decorations. It provides an impressive, almost dreamlike atmosphere that fits perfectly with the customer’s notion of a one-of-a-kind and impressive home. This design blends the sturdy and straightforward qualities of Romanesque architecture with the ornate decor and vertical focus of Gothic architecture, achieving a space that unifies multiple architectural styles.
Style Elements
One of the most distinguishing aspects of Gothic architecture is the pointed arches, which will be a prominent feature throughout the residence. Not only will they serve a structural purpose, but they will also create a feeling of openness and height. Stave glass windows will be included in the design to add to the dream-like atmosphere. Not only will they bring in natural light, but they will also create a captivating display of colors, brightening many areas of the residence.
Inspired by the soaring ribbed vaults in Gothic cathedrals, the residence’s interior will feature vaulted ceilings. These will add drama and spaciousness, elevating the overall aesthetic and providing a unique architectural element. While typically associated with Gothic cathedrals, incorporating flying buttresses into the exterior design will create a striking visual impact.
These structural supports will not only lend a sense of grandeur but also add an element of authenticity to the Gothic-inspired residence. Intricate stone carvings will adorn the façade and interior spaces, adding a touch of opulence and refinement. These carvings will depict traditional Gothic motifs such as gargoyles, floral patterns, and biblical scenes, further emphasizing the desired architectural style.
