Introduction
Working on a group project presents challenges for each group member, but it also offers valuable opportunities for learning and growth. Being a member of a team requires responsibility, effective communication, collaboration skills, and a shared understanding of the project’s ultimate goal. Preparing the presentation for a new ecotourism venture was not easy, but the concerted efforts of each team member allowed the project to be completed.
This reflection report aims to evaluate the challenges that emerged during the group work and analyze the approaches to addressing them. Most importantly, the report will enable me to reflect on the lessons learned during this experience and ensure that I can successfully apply the knowledge I have gained in the future. The two areas of focus in the present report concern the lack of coherence in team members’ thinking at the initial stage of the project and the difficulties in correlating sustainable development goals with the ecotourism venture. The analysis of these areas has enabled a deeper understanding of others’ opinions and perspectives, as well as a better understanding of similar issues in the future.
The Lack of Coherence in Team Members’ Thinking
The first major challenge we faced as a team was the lack of coherence in each member’s understanding of what the project should look like, which elements and topics were most crucial, which could be omitted, and what overall goals were to be pursued. At first, I was at a loss because the project was significant to me, and it seemed that my colleagues did not quite understand its significance. However, the more we argued, the more I realized that it was important to them, too, and that each of us was trying to include in the project what seemed the most valuable to them. At that point, we decided to take a break and do some research on positive solutions to our problems.
Explaining the Problem with Abductive Reasoning
I focused my research on the ways of thinking, as those had the potential to help resolve our disputes and improve our collaboration. I selected several articles on abductive reasoning, critical thinking, and reflective thinking to guide me through the challenge. The readings on abductive reasoning helped me understand what was lacking in our approach to the project’s primary goals.
With the use of abductive reasoning, it is possible to provide a more effective initial explanation of a problem (Behfar & Okhuysen, 2018; zu Belzen et al., 2021); therefore, I employed this approach when meeting with my peers. Shani et al. (2019) note that abductive reasoning enables individuals to settle disagreements about different research processes and outcomes.
Indeed, it was helpful in my case, as abductive reasoning enables the drawing of probable conclusions from what one knows (Hwang et al., 2019). Hence, I set some goals based on my knowledge and research of the topic and shared them with my colleagues. Since abductive reasoning is a comprehensive model of idea generation (Garbuio & Lin, 2021), it enabled our team to build mutual strategies and formulate goals without further arguing.
Applying Critical Thinking to Understand the Problem
Another crucial aspect of research that helped us overcome the lack of understanding was the analysis of critical thinking. The ability to think clearly and rationally, enabled by critical skills, has become one of the core pillars of the modern world (Changwong et al., 2018). As Prayogi et al. (2018) note, critical thinking is one of the most essential skills for 21st-century learners.
Meanwhile, Wechsler et al. (2018) report that critical thinking has the potential to promote problem-solving skills, whereas Seibert (2021) explains how this approach helps in challenging situations. These research findings not only helped me understand the value of critical thinking but also taught me ways to enhance it. I shared some critical findings with my peers, which enabled us to develop viable solutions to the stumbling blocks. As Hanscomb (2019) notes, critical thinking enables the formulation and challenge of arguments, while also fostering the ability to remain calm, tolerant, and open-minded in challenging situations. These research findings were helpful not only in reassuring me about our disagreements but also in paving the way to managing our problems.
Reflective Thinking in Resolving the Issue
While critical thinking was effective in identifying problems and devising solutions, reflective thinking allowed us to evaluate our understanding of the topic. The concept of reflective thinking is most commonly associated with the learning and education process. Specifically, Karaoglan-Yilmaz et al. (2023) emphasize the correlation between reflective thinking and metacognitive awareness.
Reflective thinking is also recognized for its ability to develop trust and confidence (Postholm, 2018), accurately assess one’s knowledge (Krumrei-Mancuso et al., 2020), promote the processes of reasoning (Evans, 2019), and even serve as a tool for self-surveillance (Cushion, 2018). In our case, reflective thinking promoted an understanding of the knowledge each of us had about the topic and identified areas that needed improvement. It highlighted how addressing these knowledge gaps would enhance our collective work on the project.
The analysis of the lack of coherence between our goals and expectations in the initial stage of the project enabled each team member to become more aware of the gaps and identify the necessary abilities and resources to fill them. I was the one who initiated the research and analysis, but I could see that everyone benefited from it. No one was angry with me for encouraging them to conduct additional research. After assessing our abilities and drawbacks, we became closer in our cooperation and felt free to express our ideas on the various aspects of the project. I intend to utilize critical and reflective thinking approaches, as well as abductive reasoning, in my future career as an effective way to mitigate conflicts and perceive the needs and limitations of each team member, including myself.
Challenges in Correlating Sustainable Development Goals with the Ecotourism Venture
The second critical area that we identified during the project was discerning the role of ecotourism in achieving sustainable development goals. Although it seems evident and self-explanatory that ‘eco’ is synonymous with ‘sustainable,’ it turned out not to be that evident when we started working on the project. Our initial aim was to present a new venture that would attract tourists with self-conscious approaches to nature and the environment. When setting this goal, we were guided by the Sustainable Development Goals, which promote social, economic, and environmental sustainability (Halkos & Gkampoura, 2021). Also, our venture was guided by the view that innovation is a key driver of sustainability (Silvestre & Țîrcă, 2019). Hence, due to the innovative nature of our project, we considered it to be moving toward sustainable goals.
However, during our work, we realized that the complexity of the global environment needed to be considered more deeply, as emerging challenges make some of the goals rather difficult to attain (Klarin, 2018). Furthermore, we learned that the creation of a resort, even with the noblest sustainable aims in mind, requires the analysis of a complex infrastructure, which is the basis of any sustainable endeavor (Thacker et al., 2019).
To address the emerging issues, we researched literature on ecotourism and broadened our perspective on this industry. Although ecotourism is only emerging as an object of investigation in scholarly studies, it is acknowledged that the authorities of protected locations are likely to promote such businesses, as they aim to generate financial profits for communities while preserving nature (Khanra et al., 2021). The study by Harianto et al. (2020) was beneficial, as it provided valuable insights into strategies for ecotourism management, which were particularly relevant to our project.
At some point, however, we were discouraged by our topic choice after reading the article by Wondirad (2019), which raises doubts about the real connection between ecotourism and sustainable development. However, the majority of findings were more reassuring, and we decided to take the negative lessons from Wondirad’s (2019) article as a reminder of what should be avoided in our project. We further bolstered our plan with findings from several studies on ecotourism, which provided valuable insights into the matter.
For instance, Mondino and Beery (2018) provide an explanation of ecotourism as a learning tool for sustainable development, which helped create the business model and explain the value proposition. Meanwhile, Kc et al.’s (2021) study helped understand the perspectives of stakeholders and create the customer profile. Ultimately, upon studying the article by Wondirad et al. (2020), we recognized the significance of stakeholder collaboration in sustainable ecotourism development. We utilized these findings when developing the business model to ensure that all critical aspects of collaboration were incorporated.
While we were able to reach a positive conclusion to the challenge in the end, it is necessary to admit that some of the studies’ findings took us aback. We did not expect that the movement toward sustainable goals would be not only complex but, in some instances, would be used as a means of concealing less noble goals. However, conducting research helped us identify opportunities and work on them.
The overall impact of the challenge was that we realized that unexpected issues can arise in any venture, and one must be prepared to face and properly manage them. I do not think that I could approach such a challenge differently in the future since we chose the most effective way of dealing with it. As a lesson from this challenge, in my future professional development, I will continually thoroughly evaluate the pros and cons of a venture before supporting or investing in it.
Conclusion
Self-reflection is a valuable tool for noticing one’s mistakes or weaknesses. In the case of the present analysis, reflecting on the challenges that occurred during our project allowed my peers and me to reevaluate our knowledge and expand on it. Evaluating one’s drawbacks allows for avoiding similar issues in the future, so I approached the reflection with utmost seriousness and responsibility. I hope that the lessons learned from our project work will help everyone achieve success in their future endeavors.
